Instead of sitting on his butt saying, “Well, Gee wiz. I don’t know anything about being a carpenter so I should just give up. Heck, I don’t really know much about most jobs. Maybe I should just live with my Mom and Dad forever.”
I am sorry that you were working in a “man’s job” at 16, but my BIL was lucky enough to be able to wait a few years before having to jump into adult responsibilities.
As for myself, Yes, I have been an electrician’s helper for a year and a half. This was a career change for me. I was a trucker and on the road for a good many years, but after my son was born I decided it was time for me to stick a little closer to home. Despite what ever you may like to think, boy is a word that hasn’t described me in a long time. I also have done roofing through most of my teen years and off and on since then.
I think that before the next time you decide to be rude and condescending, perhaps you should find out more about the person you are choosing to look down your nose at.
Or if that is too difficult, just stick to the old adage, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

I'll be sure to find out if anyone has a sense of humor before I post anything from now on...
Dennis was the one who said yu were a boy...I said you might be 50...as for your BIL...All I did was agree with another guy...Dennis hates me from way back and that's why he jumped me instead of the original antagonist...re-read...I was nice...

I think it's great that you came over to ask advice - great and also really a coincidence. Be that as it may, don't take Boleyz the wrong way, he means well.
Have you ever built a bridge or lived under one? You sound familiar........

I’m just getting pretty annoyed with the way some people are acting. This is not about Dennis and what ever you may have going on with him. This is about the fact that I ask a simple question, and while I have been given good advice from several people, have also received some down right nasty and/or stupid comments from others. Yes, you may only be agreeing with one of those people but that throws you into the pot with them. You are right though, I shouldn’t have just lashed out at you, I should have made that post to several people that have posted. Your words may have been nice, but your sentiment was not.
As for having a sense of humor, I’m sorry; it just seems more like a laughing at me, not with me.
Look, I have no problem with you or anyone else as long as we can all act like adults and not mock each other. That was something that I gave up when I got out of my grade school years.

Wow, that's a big ax you're grinding for only 14 posts. To echo Rodney King: "Why can't we all just GET ALONG????"

I Do go on a bit...agreed...I get tickled at folks sometimes and I AM a smart-alek by nature...I still live in my grade school years. They were some of the best years of my life.
No worries, No responsibilities, 3 squares (cooked by Mom) every day, several good friends to josh around with and laugh with AND to laugh at from time-to -time.
The ability to enjoy life and other people...Yep, the grade school years were definitely some of the best. I think I'll stay there, at least in my spirit and outlook.
Maybe when I get, oh...I dunno...75-80 I'll think about getting mean and crotchety.
Hey, I'll tell ya what! I've got a thread started about building my own house and farm that is REALLY stupid...Go over there and Laugh AT me...Mock me if ya want to. Tell me I'm a fool, it'll be great! :baby04:

ForrestFrank, I didn't mean to put that the way it came out. I was just trying to make a point that it sounded like your BIL was a young man just starting out and as I said, was man enough to reach out for some help.
Don't ever let an ------- stop you from asking questions. I can build a house from the ground up, but I still run into things I don't know and when I do, I sit down long enough to figure out who I need to call to find out what ever it is I don't know. And I have gotten several answers right here on HT.
God Bless

For everyone's info
There is nobody on earth that can make me stop asking questions. I live by and believe something I heard a long time ago "The only stupid question is a question not asked.

There's nothing wrong with asking questions!
Also, if you want to know how to build a stone fireplace or lay paving stones. you can ask Boleyz.
I don't think he really knows, though -
I think his wife did the work!

Forrestfrank,Dennisjp what area in Virginia are you in? I am in the Culpeper area and there is still some building going on here. I am an eletrician and it is a very good job to get into. I started as a helper in 84 and after a few years and a lot of learning. I was upgraded to a mechanic. My pay check was upgraded to. In Floridia I was making 10 dollers per hour and up here in Virginia I can make more. I also think it is better to find a big job that is close to where you live or a company that is close to home.some jobs start at the shop and some start at the job. With electrician it is most times a start at the job deal. If it is a large job then there is a shop or trailor on the job that you must be at first thing in the morning. I have had both kinds of jobs. As an electrician most of the time there is a list of things that you must have (hand tools). Look at the list above and you will be adding more like pliers, channel locks, and an assortment of others. But you dont know what you will till you are working.
PS electricians are treated different on the jobs I can shut all of the power off and say that I am working on it and the carpenters might have to get out the generators
remember that every trade has its benifits and draw backsand you should make your choice wisely.

Bolezy. has anyone ever told you that is a stupid looking picture of yourself, or is it really you at all. If it isn't you, I would hate to see the real one.

ok my 2 cents im a genral contractor
i would start with a belt with more than 2 pockets and big pockets i started with the cheap one and upgraded quick to a much better set of bags it will save money in the long run, if he is going to mainly do framing a good framing hammer dont go for the cheap 16 oz it will wear his arm out. he also needs a board strecher most boss dont supply one. than the usual speed square, carpenters pencil(get a case or two",box blade knife. that should be the basics he will learn more what he needs once he is on the job site.
God bless

Board strecher
Ever since the first time 20 years when someone tried to send me for a board stretcher, I have not gone looking for one yet. And don’t plan on it any time in the future. LOL
