OK, I would draw the line at burning tires in it just because it would smell so bad outside. However, a friend of ours had a huge outdoor furnace that they fed with tires all winter long and it was always toasty in her home.
I looked at coal furnaces-around here they are very inexpensive, as is the coal. However, coal is not a renewable resource and wood is. Therefore, coal is not an option for my family. We intend to glean from state cuttings, which is legal here, and cut up deadfall on the mountain behind our park. (With permission from the owner, of course.) And there is always all the scrap at my husband's workplace. It is all hardwood, burns longer and smells wonderful. We spend a couple of days each spring planting new trees where we removed deadfall for my fil-we will just add to them to replace what mother nature so graciously provided us with. The plan is to begin stockpiling wood after hunting season ends, along the back of the trailer. We are hoping to build our ricks this weekend. (Notice I said "hoping"--it is a holiday and we are bound to get distracted)
The more I look at the site, the better I like the lil house heater. Now I just have to convince my dh. Shouldn't be a problem-the unit costs less than we will spend in heating and repair fees for this furnace!!! (Which, by the way, STILL is not working correctly.)
