Can you smell snow?

Does anyone else imagine that you can smell snow...like when it is going to snow? I'm not trying to snow you.

GoatsRus 11/15/06 09:40 AM

Nope, but I can smell when it's going to rain.

dagwood 11/15/06 09:41 AM

My broken but healed bones can predict weather changes a lot faster than my nose.....and more accurate than the local weather-guessers too! :p :p

Rose :)

Can you describe the smell?

sweetcountrygrl 11/15/06 09:48 AM

Absolutely :)

PineRidge 11/15/06 10:09 AM

I can smell rain coming. I never "smelled" snow, but I always feel it. I haven't had any broken bones to gain this power either, lol. But it's different than when I know rain is coming  I'm more accurate then the weather guessers here too, but that isn't hard to beat.

moonwolf 11/15/06 10:11 AM

I can usually tell by wind direction change and cloud formations if it's going to snow immimently within a half day or so. No long term 'smell' to know it's going to snow, though. I watch cows to see what they are doing, too.

diane 11/15/06 10:14 AM

Yes, I think there is a smell before snow like there is before rain. It's almost like the smell of line dryed sheets, but less intense and more of a crisp smell IMO.

Calico Katie 11/15/06 10:15 AM

I don't know how to describe the smell but there definitely is one. It isn't as distinct as rain. It's just a wet, cold, clean smell in the wind.

....or open the freezer door when it's empty of food and take a quick whiff.

Madame 11/15/06 11:52 AM

I can smell it when it's near.

comfortablynumb 11/15/06 12:02 PM

i can smell snow on the way also..

it smells like ozone to me.

mayfair 11/15/06 12:52 PM

I can smell snow, too.

Beltane 11/15/06 12:52 PM

Absolutely!

A'sta at Hofstead 11/15/06 01:17 PM

Oh yeah! I can smell it! Sometimes all the way from Mount Washington!

......and ozone smells like negative ions.

Denise K. 11/15/06 02:25 PM

snow

Yes I can. Can't describe it but I know.... not sure if it is a smell, changes in the barometric pressure or just what but I have leaned to trust the feeling.

frogmammy 11/15/06 02:29 PM

It seems to me the smell of coming snow occurs within the first 1/2" of the end of my nose..in the top portion..the smell is sharp and bright.

stirfamily 11/15/06 04:15 PM

When we were first married DH always made fun of my "nose". But now he's learned to trust it. Yep, can smell both snow and rain.

OMG, Yes!! LOL. I always say "it smells like snow" and my fiance says, no, that's just someone with a fire in their fireplace somewhere. But IT'S NOT! I KNOW what a woodfire smells like, and this is NOT the same thing!! We've had this debate for years, and I just figured he was right, because he usually turns out to be right (darn him!), but now I know other people can smell it too! THANKS!! :p

Honorthorn 11/15/06 04:24 PM

People have thought I was crazy when I would say "...smells like snow..."
I'm not the only nut!!!!

LamiPub 11/15/06 04:26 PM

yes. my daughter's nose is our snow forecast. my sinuses predict rain and storms but not 100% with snow. Her nose doesn't fail

Yeah, that's the best description I can come up with.

http://unclebobs.infopop.cc/1lach1.gif I was going to say snow smells like a picture window, because that's what I want between us. I can smell water because I have lived in the desert where you don't get to smell it very often. A donkey can smell water a half mile away. And water is full of tricks we don't know about, including electrical effects such as making ozone at odd moments, so it's quite possible that some people can smell snow. But I'm not one of them.

hillsidedigger 11/15/06 07:52 PM

I can't smell snow now because there's no snow happenning here

but when snow is falling and I'm outside in the falling snow, yes, there is an olfactory sensation, I think.

WildernesFamily 11/15/06 11:02 PM

My hubby and I can both smell snow when it's on the way. I love the smell. I wouldn't be able to describe it though.... crisp, fresh, cold, sharp come to mind, but it's such a distinct smell.

MelissaW 11/16/06 04:51 AM

I can smell snow, rain, heat (I'm not kidding, if the wood furnace is getting to hot, or something is left on or overheating, I can tell), the exact moment when food is finished cooking, and teeny tiny amounts of mold. I guess it makes up for having horrible vision!

Nancy in Maine 11/16/06 04:56 AM

Absolutely I can smell when a snow is coming. It does smell different.

HeavenHelpMe 11/16/06 07:03 AM

Yes! And my husband always looks at me like I belong in a padded room when I tell him. :flame:

nduetime 11/16/06 07:07 AM

yes, smells crisp and clean to me, a little bit liike sheets out on the line on a colder day.

stars01 11/16/06 07:13 AM

Yes!!!

Yes. That's pretty close. :)

perennial 11/16/06 08:03 AM

Yes, i can definitely smell snow when it's coming. Hard to describe though - i'll have to pay more attention when it's coming next time.

Triffin 11/16/06 09:09 AM

"Smells like snow"
But I couldn't describe it to you

Triff ..

I can definitely tell when it's going to snow. The air has a certain smell that I immediately associate with snow. The first thing on me that acts up during a pressure change is my knees, the screws in there assure that.

SignMaker 11/16/06 05:16 PM

What is snow???

:p

:badmood: Snow is the very worst 4-letter word in the English Language. Some people think it's pretty, but that's only because they don't have to live in and put up with it 5 months out of every year. (yeah--you can call me grouchy)

Grandmotherbear 11/16/06 06:06 PM

Yes, but have not been called on to exercise this talent for years. And no, it doesn't smell like your freezer. That's metallic/ammonia-y smelling.

Oilpatch197 11/16/06 06:11 PM

I CAN smell that fresh Northern Canadian cold air! :)

NightHawk 11/16/06 08:46 PM

Yep, and can you hear it? I can hear it in side the house, sometimes wakes me up. Like a blanket of pressure and its qiuet then its hitting the trees, lines, roof and tinkling through the air. Tinkling?
