Around here if you have over a certain amount of acerage you dont even have to own a septic tank.... (dont worry, we have a proper septic!)
So, go pick on someone else.
Its a federal law.
Its a common sence law.
Id think one of them would cover you.
Its not a I hate you thing its a Im concerned for you and your neighbors welfare thing.
Think of it this way the aquafier is a thin layer of sand under the ground . the water seeps into it. It may be spread across millions of acres like in nebraska or it may be less than one. If you pour surface water into it comtaminantes can spread thru the aquifier much more easily than it spreads downward thru the soil. How far is your nearest neighbors well? it might not be long before their well is contaminanted from the surface water you are pouring into it. But unlike you they may not expect their clean well water to have those impurities in them and so wont take the precautions you do and might become sick and DIE.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for all the great suggestions!!! We are looking into the Berkefeld filters - didn't even know they existed till this post - and glad we didn't purchase the one from REI!

Thanks again!
