As our hens were ranging yesterday I noticed one whom had a dime size snail shell in her beak, she took it to the concrete walk to crack it, thats tool use, a sign of intelligence.

Adds a whole new dimension to a plate of fried chicken, doesn't it?

Ours do the same thing w/ bluejays and crows, too! The roos, guineas and tom turkeys will all holler like mad, and the hens ,chicks & ducks will all take cover... there has been a chicken hawk pair hanging out, but I think all the noise made by the Guardians scare them off! It's really neat to watch, we have like 18 roos in our flock, and they really work together to protect the flock, and the turkeys will display and gobble madly, and the guineas will emit ear-shattering shreiks... the other morning they all started going off, and my 8 month old Pyr,Isaiah, perked up at their alarm, and took off towards the fence, barking, towards a huge crow they were screeching at! How on earth does the PUP understand their language, too??
My roos also allll do the "Psst..c'mere honey, I got a BIG JUICY BUG..." act... sly lil' devils!!! You'd think the girls would learn after a couple hundred times....

i HAD a pair of guineas, that were determined to make a nest outside the chicken yard. one day, he came in alone. he looked for her for weeks.
the other day, he was on top of the building, wings dropped screeching at a hawk flying over, i'm sure he was saying "You're the one that took my woman, come on down here--I'll whip your behind!!"

My birds that can't fly up into their coop will come over to the house and make noise by the door as the sun starts to go down. They will then wait to be picked up and stroked as you carry them lovingly to bed or will run back to the coop when we appear. Pick one up and start walkign that way and the rest follow. The ones that can fly just go in and never bother us. Some chickens are really smart.

I have a couple of ducks--Sasha and Portnoy.

Occasionally Portnoy likes to have the wading pool to himself and won't allow Sasha in.

Sasha will then act like he's found something terribly interesting in the grass and when Portnoy comes to investigate, Sasha makes a dash for the water.

Portnoy has yet to catch on.
