This situation is terning into a political hot potato over around Hillsboro and Litchfeild IL . Has anyplace in the United states or the world required mines be backfilled to take care of this problem?

I've seen houses cave in. It happened about 10 miles from here when I was a teenager-- 4 or 5 houses and a big section of road all disappeared.... Just down the road from here 3 or 4 houses fell in in the 40's and they say there are old mines under the whole town.

They call it under mining here. Several of our roads are like roller coasters and there has been houses ruined from land sinking from old coal mines. If you make a big hole under ground and leave it where does the filler come from to fill it in. We all know earth does not grow anymore so as it settles in the surface must sink. Sam

the huge new mouth of the mine power plant in Southern IL I heard is supposed to put its scrubber by-product (gypsum) in an old mine. Don't kow if it's surface or under ground. I think underground.

No other reason needed. Sure the mines could be backfilled, sort of. The cost of coal would need to double or more, and the cost of electricity would also double (or more). The general public would whine and not want to spend the money just so your life could be more convenient. Suck it up, that is just how it is
