I would not use mothballs in the car, with small children that could find them, and also inhale the fumes.

I had mice in my old chevy p/u. They would fill the glove box with dog food kibbles. One day I turned on the heater fan and heard a "thunk" when I killed one. For the next three months I smelled burnt mouse when I used the heater. I finally started the truck turned the heat on high and left it idling for four hours. I finally burned that little carcass into ash somewhere in the vents. Anyway I still had mice no matter what I did until I shipped the truck to Alaska. I don't know if any made it up north, but I never saw them again.

Oh believe me, I feel for you! A few weeks ago my Dh was driving me to work, the 2 kids in the backseat. All of a sudden, I felt something drop or my upper arm, and my first thought was " oh crap, a baby chick got in the car!" I looked down, and there was a MOUSE on my arm!! I started screaming bloody murder, and flung the dang thing up in the air, it bounced off the dashboard, landed on the passenger side windowsill, while I planted my feet on the dashboard, trying to get up off the seat and get the window down at the same time! I didn't succeed, and it hopped down to the seat and scurried under the seat!! All the while my kids were screaming just as loud as I was, and my husband is calmly driving down the road, ignoring my shreaking and pleading to " STOP THE #@&*%$ CAR!!!"
"There's a car behind me." is all he said.
Believe me, when I got to work I scrubbed my arm for a good 10 minutes. Still haven't caught him, I wonder where he's hiding?
I had just been commenting on what a good job our cat, Fuzzybutt, does of keeping the place free of rodents a few days before, too.

Mice
Pink Carnation has the solution, an easy one at that. Peppermint will deter mice.
Use peppermint oil or use a bottle of peppermint extract and scatter droplets of it throughout the car. Trunk, under the hood, and throughout the passenger compartment. They will leave post haste.

Ok you have mice in the barn, collect some cats feed them in the evening only. I cleaned a 40x100 barn out of mice doing that.....Also use a "bar" bait that you can put in the car that they cannot carry off for later........buy some and put out in the barn. But best luck I ever had was "wanted cats for mice problem in barn" sign at grocery store.....I once had 30 cats.....they slowly wandered off down to about 8 left. cheapest mice control ever.........Cat food!
ALSO remember if they are in the car they can be under the hood............UGH>>> wiring problems............You know they say "hey lets eat a green wire today, and a yellow one tomorrow guys!" so get after them and you.........quit eating in the car.

If you use a mouse trap be sure to put it in an open lunch bag! Sometimes they can "mess" the carpet in there... Then just roll up the bag and toss away!
I had a problem with mice getting in a classic car that we would put away for the winter, soooo I left little bags of "treats" hehehe.... Problem Solved!

I use those nifty black box snap traps--basically a snap trap inside a plastic black box--open the front hatch, bait the paddle, close the hatch and pull down the lever. You know you have a mouse when the lever's snapped up or a tail's hanging out the hatch. Push the lever back down and dispose of the mouse. The box contains the mess, and for some reason it catches the most mice.

Oh--good news--DH just came in and said the box trap caught the mouse right in the spare tire well that I saw it in yesterday!
Score one for Apple Cinnamon NutriGrain Bars!
Problem solved...for now...

Um I have been eating in my car for 20 years and I have never had an accident doing it. Not even close. All the accidents I have been in have been other people fault.
Would you rather he eat at home and have to drive 90 to get where he is going?
BTW, Sticky traps work great, they can't get out. Then every morning chuck them out until you have time to dispose of them. I use a bucket of water, but you have to hold them down because the trap floats and they stick their noses out...

sullen...I use the sticky traps because I don't like gore and blood spatters...but I hate the stickys too because I empathize too much with the abject terror of the mouse on the trap. One night I had a nightmare that there was a mouse on a sticky trap under my daughter's baseboard radiator and I was feeling the waves and waves of pure fear it was feeling as it struggled to free itself.
It really was a terrible nightmare.
That said, you simply can't have rodents in your house. They are unsanitary and also can cause fires.

My mother had mice build a nest INSIDE the air duct system of her car, completely plugging the heater/ac
|
I had that with my van. Everytime I turned the fan on, I heard rattling sounds. Turns out a mouse had made a nest in there. I took it to the mechanic's and he blew the system out with a mega vac.
Same van, another mouse problem. Removed the kids' car seats and the vanseat underneath had a few little mousepoops. I suppose they were snacking on the kids' food crumbs. Hey, I don't know about you, but on long trips, you have to give the kids something. Listening to "I'm hungry" for an hour is not an option! And who has time to vaccum after each trip? Not me.
Anyhow, I set up a few mouse traps on the floor. Caught the little boogers. I still set the traps in there occasionally just to be sure but haven't caught anymore. We do set traps also in the garage though, and have caught a few. And even if you don't have food to attract them, mice will still take up residence. We had a nest built in our lawn tractor engine compartment and once on the top of my car motor. Those mice (and let's not forget chipmunks) will try anything.

if they empty traps and dont get caught, try tying a small piece of greasy bacon to the trigger, with a piece of thread, gets them every time
|
You can also use a cottonball soaked in bacon grease. I keep a small container of grease just for the occasion. They don't seem to be big on cheese but love peanut butter, although it's messier. Probably anything with a strong rich smell would work.

Glad I'm not the only one. Then I wondered how the Moose had good enough aim to get them in the empty cereal bowl. Maybe I should just go to bed.
