Never had an electric range do this, but my husband had a similar, but really aweful, experience with an electric smoker with those coils. He had plugged it in to heat before adding some shad. He took the lid off and looked down on it as he removed one of the grills. The grill barely scraped the electric coil on the way out and the coil blew up. It filled his eyes with what we believe was porcelin (the inside of the coil). I flushed his eyes with saleen for hours and little white chips kept running out. He was in a lot of pain and I finally convinced him to go to the eye doctor the next day. She said he was lucky he was wearing contact lenses as it protected his eyes somewhat. As it was, it scratched and bruised his cornea and his sight was bleary for a couple of days.

Very scary.

I never knew that could happen but now it make a lot of sense that it really could. I would not think a pressure canner would/could do that. For a pressure canner has to hold pressure inside and any small hole will just get bigger and worse with the increase in pressure.... you would know it right as it came to pressure to vent the steam.
All of that is really scary....

Also, a pressure canner has a pretty thick wall compared to a water bath.

Canning Catastrophe

When I saw the thread title, I thought, "Why would anyone want to do that?"

But, I don't know, maybe life gets a little too calm, staid and boring. So, you walk over to the pantry, open a can of catastrophe ...

And, Foom! Things are hopping again.

Update:

Last week we were finally able to remove this dangerous electric range and replace it with a gas cooktop.

Gitcha a pk of JB weld

Take a wire brush, and brush hard an area round the size of a silver dollar on both sides. nux together what you think itall take to cover both sides good and slightly thick, and paste it on both sides. Leave it in a warm area for a day, and your good to go. Ive patched several tractor water jackets in the engine where they had frozen with this stuff.

ref: your canning catastrophe

Yes, I have had the exact same thing happen to me! Thank goodness mine was a big heavy canner, and the piece of metal ricocheted across the kitchen, and not into the canner itself. I now have an LP stove! (the old electric one that this happened to literally shorted out not long after the "burner incident", and shot sparks all over the kitchen! We were very lucky it didn't burn down the house! You were very lucky you were not hurt by the flying metal!

Woof! That is scary!

Like others have said, glad no one was hurt.

I never could get the hang of electric ranges. And now that I've seen what happens when the coil arcs with the pan... I'm not going to try again!

Now there's something you don't hear every day. Over the 13 years I've had my electric stove I've had to replace each of the four burners once already and one of the larger burners just recently for the second time all with just a "pop". Thanks for posting this. I was unaware they could go out with such a dammaging and potentially dangerous bang. Safer more durable replacement burners are definately something I'll be looking into. Sorry that happened to you. A good canning pot isn't so cheap.

We have a very old hand-me-down electric stove. 2 of the burners are faulty.

Fortunately we told our nephew we want a gas stove. He works at an appliance store, and they frequently let the employees have scratched or dented applainces for free. These aren't used applaiances, they are brand new. So my nephew is watching for a nice gas stove for us, and after reading this topic, I'm very anxious to get it!

So..I finally got around to reading this post...
OMG!! I had no idea that was possible! We have the OLD electric stove that came with this place!! Nothing works the way it is supposed to.. it took awhile to figure that on the front left burner, medium is high etc.. and the top oven element doesn't work so I have to be careful not to burn the bottom of everything. I was gonna replace it someday, but after this..someday is a lot closer than I thought. Going back to gas..of course DH said that the eye popping was nothing to a gas explosion..true that, but still!
