Sorry about that! In my neck of the woods, when the word soil is used, it's usually in reference to diapers, as in "he soiled his diaper". The only other time is generally when people are referring to a specific kind of soil: topsoil. Come to think of it, the other times when I have heard people use the word "soil", it's coming from city folk. You know, they use words like "vehicle" instead of "car", "bathe" instead of "wash", "soil" instead of "dirt"....say, CF, you aren't a city boy, are you? Just kidding!

googly eyes Muller, you took the words out of my mouth. We do not have to live that way, yea we do, we would be miserable otherwise. but, one man's owl is another man's nightingale.

"how, much is the going rate for a toe tag? no sir not moving into no big city. "
The only way I would move without a toe tag would be to a place farther off the grid...such as when civilization starts to creep too close to the current homestead.

sullen, I'm glad you are happy wherever you are, though. You sound like you prefer the city to the country and there is nothing wrong with that.

Man! you want cold and self centered come to Maine. Meanest most selfish bunch of money grubbing silly people I have ever met.
Well except for the people from Maine in here....
The way life should be! Mean people and quiet! Best of both worlds.
And you are right, I learned long ago to be happy with wherever I live. TY.

I don't think there would be enough money out there. We live on my SO's land in Iowa. We found a plaque in the drawer when we were tearing the old farmhouse apart to renovate it. It was from the Iowa Department of Agriculture, honoring my SO's grandfather for farming this land for over 50 years. It was issued in 1973. This farm used to be over 450 acres. All that's left is the 12 acres my SO has and the 60 acres his brother owns. The rest is DNR land. That's not so bad as we don't have any neighbors and live at the end of a mile long gravel road. I don't think we'll ever leave here...

I lived in Fayetteville for lots of years, and it isn't like NYC, or DC, but it is way, way, way, too big for this ole country girl[almost 70,000]....I love my 40 acres like I never thought it would be possible to love a non living being...well, it IS living...but not human, or dog, or cat, or horse, or, or, or........... I ge out there and walk in the woods, and hear the critters, see the beauty, and smell the clean, fresh air....there is NOTHING like it!!! I too, am not scared of cities, I just don't like the hustle and bustle of them. I like the more laid back pace of country life. If I were to become a millionaire, I would still live on my 40 acres, and try to live my life as simply, and as harmoniously with nature as one possibly can.................don't need any bad karma........

we've talked about my going back to the active duty army, but that doesn't seem to be anything we want to do subject ourselves to anytime soon. sure it's security, but it's not life as we want to live it.

How much money would it take to get me to give up my homestead?
Honey, they don't have enough printing presses to create enough money to get me to move away from here!
I lived in the city, and now I am out.
I am happy.
There isn't enough money to get me back to the city.

Live without dirt?? I NEED dirt to survive! We don't live this way because we HAVE to, it's in our blood and we are happiest living in the dirt!

I guess I just found the person who will raise my cow......
I used to live in Chi town, north side, it was cool. Nice little neighborhoods, bus service all hours of the night. I really like Chicago.
I could live my whole life without hands in dirt, I have never gotten the whole dirt thing. Too carnal for me. I like people. Not that you guys don't, I just am not into dirt. I live like this purely because I have land and am using it.

I have thought about this ever since CF posted this. My husband died five weeks ago. We lived briefly in a nearby city while we saved to buy land many years ago. I was miserable and so was he and it wasn't even a big city. When we found this piece of land we found heaven on earth and never left it any more than we absolutely had to. He died here at home, and I hope to do the same. I love everything about SOIL, but best of all fresh turned soil in the spring......the smell of it. We have 40 acres on a dirt road with lots of woods, a stream and brook.
Struggling to get the wood in by myself the past few weeks, I have asked myself is it worth it? Do I want to stay here alone? The answer over and over again is yes. Where else would I have the serenity and security that I have here? I can pace myself and do what I need to do to eat and stay warm.
Although I miss my hubby terribly, I feel comfort in being here and I enjoy walking in the woods with my dog and seeing all the wildlife. I love the quiet and always have.
On the other hand, Sullen.......no one could make me live someplace I didn't enjoy unless by force. Sorry you are someplace that doesn't seem to suit you at all.

I'm from Chicago, used to take the subway (or the "L" as they call it) to work - NO WAY could you pay me enough to go back to that life, even for a 6 months. ACK!
