I once worked back in 1984 with an engineering/construction company that designed and built the new foundation for a 100 year old, 3 story, 8500 square foot house (a historical property in the way of a new highway).

The house, except the basement, was jacked-up (floor joists were 4" X 12", that helped), six flatbed trailers were driven underneath and fastened together. Then 2 D-9s pulling in front and 2 D-9s pushing from the back moved the structure about a quarter mile along a graded pathway to the new foundation where it was placed.

It all worked out very well, kind of expensive.

One of my uncles made his living moving houses. He moved a lot of them. If the house is good to start with, the move shouldn't do any damage to it. In all the years he moved them, only once did he have any damage to one, and his insurance paid to make it right for the owner. I'd say check out the house, do lots of investigating, then go for it. Talk to the movers and find out what all is included in the move, what you need to do to prepare the spot where the house will be set, etc.

Yes, I had this 1920 sq. ft (960 per floor) house http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ideview003.jpg
moved a few years ago and set it up myself. The picture is after setting up and completion. Total costs were less than $40,000 excluding lot. It is the cheapest means that I know to get a good home for very few dollars. The county appraisal exceeded 100k for the house alone.
