My garage (where I keep my rubber boots) is full of black widow spiders. I took two empty plastic tub-butter containers, washed 'em out, and I "plug" each boot when I take them off. They fit just right. Haven't found any critters in there yet.

spider Tip

This has always been one of my "fears" ...When I was a kid my sister had a wolf spider that stayed in her shoe and traveled from Mo. to Ill. ..guess who found it,ever since I have always checked my shoes, anyway,, ,Heres a tip, get one of those small cheep feather dusters, sweep the boot, shake out the duster before each use! glad I'm not alone with this "fear". :baby04: Christine

I have a spider bite right now on the top of my foot from a spider in my boot!!I didn't feel it (if I did I figured it was something else). It started as a red spot like a pressure spot from tight boots. Then I woke up the next day with my foot itching(thought a mosquito had gotten me in my sleep)It oozed some now a week later it is about the size of a quarter moving from the middle out.No pain no itching just icky thinking I squished a spider in my boot and never knew it was there.

A while ago I put on a pair of jeans that had been hanging in my closet for awhile. My leg kept feeling like it was getting poked by something, I thought there was a little splinter or something in my front right pocket or a piece of the plastic thingy that holds on the tag or whatever. I took off my pants that night and there was a row of 5 or 6 red bumps going from my pocket area down to my knee. Still don't know what it was but something was in my pocket and mad that I was squishing it. It took out it's revenge all the way down while it escaped. And mand did it itch!!

My suggestion for the boots is to stick two big cups upside down over the tops of your boots, or if they aren't big enough to go around just stick them rightside up inside the boots. That oughta keep any bugs out and you probably already have a couple of 7-11 style cups sitting around anyway. Who doesn't?

Might want to check out that bite. My Brother was living in Nevada and thought he had an infected hair folicle on his toe and turned out to be a Brown Recluse bite. Lost part of his foot over it. In fact they told him if it was a female spider, she could have laid eggs under the skin. He was a nervous wreck until the day he died. Not to scare you but if it does not heal, look into it.

Doesn't look like a recluse bite. All the ones I have seen look pretty icky. Not that it is a decoration I care to keep.It isn't healing though so I guess I will have to give in and go get something.
Thanks

DH has a pinched nerve and can't feel his right foot or leg. He walked around half the day with an aligator lizard in his boot. The lizard was about 14 inches long and pretty dazed when DH shook it out...He usually checks them now...ha

My shoes have so many holes in them that I could see anything that had crawled in. I was bitten by a brown recluse some 7 years ago, I think that is where my arthritis came from. Nasty little things

really like your idea millipede about the knee-hi's
that was Bubba Can Dance's idea, I just mentioned it sounded like a good one.

Brown Recluse bites will affect different people in different ways. Some people end up with major problems and a trip to the hospital will usually help... other people might hardly even notice. Any time something looks really weird, and continues to get worse, a trip or phone call to the doctor is probably a good idea.

whitewolf, I just skimmed the thread here quickly, not sure if this was mentioned or not already but: why couldn't you just put either a big sock or the cut-off leg of a ladies' nylon over your boot tops?

I'm more concerned personally of getting a hornet in my clothes. You ever get that feeling that something is crawling under your clothes? I'll flap and smack and at the same time, hope I don't feel a sting. I hate those critters! Most of the time I don't find anything though, or if I do it's something harmless.

I did take a sip of tea once and got a mouthful of spider, though. Now that isn't nice. It must have crawled into the cup and died when I poured the hot water in. Now I hang my cups upside down and always check into them before using.

EWWWWWWWW

I have the same phobia so every day before putting my shoes on, I tap and shake them, lol. My boots however are another matter because they are high top rubber boots for the dirty jobs... they are stored out in the garage and we have everything out there from mice, huge spiders and crickets... you name it. I beat them together OUTSIDE like a mad woman, then use something with a long handle and rummage around in there, then I still feel compelled to get something to run around inside the toe area (like a huge bulky sock) as one last preventative. I'm terrified of spiders!
