For people that want a Lighter Look you might try using pages from books that are printed on older slightly yellowed paper. Just paste it up randomly and the print would sort of disappear. You could probably age white paper by lightly sponging it with weak tea. Dipping cloth in tea is an old decorators/costumers trick to age cloth. Worth a try.

Late update on the brown paper

Well last fall I completed the walls with the brown paper. And I did the upstairs hall to match. I wasn't too keen with the plain brown paper effect, so I painted it. The first paint I got turned out to be way too light. So I went for a burgundy which I absolutley loved! But it really is a lot of work. Easy, but time consuming. When it came time to go on to the bedroom walls, I simply prepared the sheetrock and painted. I do really like the borwn paper painted burgundy though.

One of the links says to try it on a floor. They use deck stain and lots of polyeurothane (sp?). Looks like a fun project!

My wife decided to decorate my office for me about 18 months ago, and did the brown paper thing. Got the large roll from Lowe's, tore them into various sized pieces, wadded them up to get some nice crinkles, then spread them back out and glued them to the wall. She went over it with some type of special color (paint) then sealed it with a clear seal. It looks just like patchwork leather. We were both really pleased with the look and have received lots of compliments.

For our half bathroom downstairs, she used some heavy vinyl material that looks like maybe a floorcovering (but not quite that heavy). Tore it into small pieces and glued them up and sealed it. It's sort of a mosaic look that's also quite different. Lots of compliments on that room too.

My wife loves to do custom wall treatments all over our house and at her shop.

She's not a great cook though!
