I do have the coffee maker..and I guess it works fine. Use bottle water because our house water has the hard minerals in it and "clogs" up any coffee makers. But..their coffee is OK..used it a few times..and cancelled it out too. BUT !!!!!!.........the very best coffee I have ever had is...Mayorga organic coffee.. www.mayorgacoffee.com...I never drank coffee until about a year ago and then discovered this coffee company. It really, really is very good coffee and I encourage you to try it. They deliver to your house..had a sample at a Sam's club one day and almost fainted at the good tast. So after many years of being a tea drinker..I'm hooked. Maybe not a good thing but no worse than tea drinking I suppose. You order when you want more..no club or payments or unwanted coffee deliveries either.

We needed a new coffee maker, so we took them up on the $10 deal. Get a decent coffee maker, some okay coffee, but we cancel the coffee deliveries immediately. I prefer to buy whole bean coffee locally, and really don't find Gevalia's coffee any different - certainly not worth the price.

We have been a customer of Gevalia on and off for years. Every coffee pot that we've gotten has lasted quite a long time (years - and that's with keeping the pot on for hours - every day!!) and the coffee is really quite good - however we don't drink the flavored stuff (I haven't found a flavored one I like yet from anywhere). No, it doesn't run $20 a pound! I have no idea what the above poster purchased except for the rare blends. The average price is about $11-12 per pound (plus shipping), which seems to be comparable to other bean coffees. The last pot we received was the stainless steel one, and it is really quite nice! It has a timer that turns the pot off after 2 hours (no more forgetting to turn the pot off!) and it also has a timer that you can set to have the coffee ready for you in the morning. I don't like how it is filled, though, but all in all it's a nice coffee maker. Certainly much nicer than the $20 one DH brought home from Walmart. That one went back and we ordered from Gevalia.
Because of the price, we only drink it on weekends - when everyone is home to enjoy it. We only buy the whole bean, and you can change the shipment time, the types of coffee you get, and you can cancel at any time. We usually will cancel when we get backed up with a few pounds of coffee that would last us about a year. By that time, Gevalia usually sends us another great offer and we start up again.
The best part is there is no obligation. You don't like the coffee, just cancel and the pot is yours!! To me it's a win-win situation. (but that's just MHO)

Mayorga is awesome. I love their Kenya AA - and found a way to get it cheap! (buy it green at the factory. $5 a pound!)

Beeman, this is not an answer to your question but I wanted to share some coffee information. The wife got a Zojirushi brand coffee maker that has the thermos type caraffe and it is great. We no longer waste coffee and I often drink the breakfast leftover coffee at lunch. The pot turns off when the brewing is finished and the coffee stays hot a long time and is never "old tasteing".

I love their coffee maker, which I use ONLY for making tea.
Don't drink coffee at all, & wife doesn't like what they sell.
So we signed up, bought enough coffee to reimburse them for the coffee maker, then gave the gourmet coffee away as X-mas presents to coffee loving relatives & friends. Everybody came out ahead on the deal.....

So where do you guys get your coffee that you roast your own... and how do you do that?
I've been trying to find a source for buying coffee beans cheaper. We usually buy Folgers coffee beans but the last time we were at the store, they didn't have them anymore . That's our preference...

I get mine when I'm overseas usually. Last time I was in Panama, I brought home 40 pounds of some of the best coffee in the world - all green, all in my carry-on, which raised some eyebrows with Homeland security. (can't imagine why.)
To find out more about roasting your own coffee, go to www.sweetmarias.com
I use an air-pop popcorn popper. Works great.
You can buy green coffee from Mayorga, and it's a good deal.

I have used Gevalia on and off for years, I get the deal with the pot and one order of coffee, then cancel. When the pot dies I do it over again. I think their breakfast blend is good, not real keen on the flavoured stuff though.

I think Gevalia is fantastic. I don't really have time to roast my own coffee, to be honest; although I will look into it.

Signed up and got a free coffemaker. Worked great until DH dropped the carafe and it shattered the glass inside. We cancelled since we had no way at the time of making coffee and we had several pounds of coffee to go through. Called later that year to ask if they could send us a replacement carafe, no deal, so we signed up again. Got a new coffeemaker which broke within a month. For some reason the little thing on the bottom of the filter cup wasn't getting pushed up enough and the water would overflow all over the counter. We cancelled and used the "savings" to buy a french press and campstove percolator. We buy beans from a local coffeehouse that roasted them. I didn't really enjoy any of the Gevalia coffee, except for the vanilla hazelnut. But now that we're going back to Maine, we're close enough to buy our absolute favorite - Green Mountain Coffee!!

Yeah, I used to get Gevalia. The coffee maker was ok, and the coffe was ok, and I even got an airpot for free. The airpot broke after a year.
Then they sent instructions on how to taste coffee. I read it carefully, because I could tell the varieties were different, but I couldn't tell what was different about them. One item was to taste no more than four kinds per session, because after four sips you can't tell one variety from another. "Well," I said, "Why am I paying four times the going rate if they officially say I can't tell what I'm drinking?" So I cancelled the service.
Now I use whatever brand is cheapest and I still can't tell one brand from another. They all taste just fine, except for anything labelled "Dark Roast". I use a 5 quart pot to mix 4 cups grounds and 1 gallon water. Cover it, then stir once after an hour. Let it brew at room temp a total of 12 hours, then filter into a dispenser. (I use a 3 liter Franzia wine bag.) Refrigerate the syrup. When you want a cup, mix 3 parts water with 1 part syrup and nuke it. Oh, the filter: it's a paper towel in a big strainer. My neighbor likes my coffee a lot. He says it's better than what his coffee maker puts out. He tries to mooch a cup whenever he can.

I get my green coffee beans off ebay. You have to really look through the auctions, many are very small quanities and way over priced. But their are deals. I personally like the Ethiopian Harar and the Indian Malabar. Sumatra coffee is good too. You pretty much just have to try a few. I am less enthused with the South American coffees though I can appreciate them also. You probably arent going to be disappointed with any high quality coffee. And if you just buy coffee for the caffeine jolt maybe just get some generic tea or put a caffeine pill in some koolaid. Lot cheaper. Cheap quality coffee is an expensive way to get caffeine and tastes like crap.
I roast in regular old frying pan. You can get a stainless basket to use with rotiserre on your grill, or as Chuck said use a hot air corn popper though you probably wont want to use it for popcorn afterwards. Not all hot air poppers work well. Those that use them seem to like the early Poppery popper. It was heavy duty and higher heat. They will go upto $40 on ebay and scarce. Before manufacturer learned to make them cheaper with the Poppery II which doesnt work well for coffee I hear. There is lot info on SweetMarias of all sorts of gadgets people have come up with to roast coffee.

Don't do it; they never let go of you, like book and music clubs, you can never escape their mailings. And no, the machine (15 years ago) wasn't worth it, imho. The coffee was fine, but you can now get "good" coffee at most grocery stores.
I see that others have had more positive experiences, and feel differently; things may have changed a bit since then...

I searched and found what I thought was the best deal from Gevalia, code 112035. You get 2 packs of coffee and a 12 cup stainless coffee maker for $10 with free shipping. I'll try and follow up as to how this works out.
