I spoke with the boss and she goes on call that Friday so she doesn't know if she can make it. If she can make it, is it all right if we bring Taz?
I'm pretty sure I will show up. My game plan is to sleep in the suburban rather than pitching a tent.
Did you get that hive going Bob or would I need to bring one of my own for a demonstration (would not have bees in it)?
Does anyone considering coming play the mandolin? I have one and plink away at it but don't really know what I'm doing.

I'll run it past the guys tonight. Sounds like a lot of fun! Do you have room for a pretty big camper (27 foot Airstream Overlander), or would tents be better? Aside from cooking, I don't have any great skills to showcase, but I am a librarian, and could probably bring a nice selection of homesteading books and a bibliography. My son is an archer. My husband is the homestead star in the family, he can build anything, and is a tractor-god. I would love to learn from some of you pros! Bob, it's so nice of you to invite everyone!

Hey Mike, sure you can bring Taz, we would love to have y'all! I am embarassed to say that I DIDN'T get the hive going because I was short on cash at that time this year, but I did get to make some good contacts and will be in the bee business for '07!

I've got room, but I am not sure how the field will be at that time. I will give some updates as we get closer so everyone can make their own judgement call on that. Your husband will probably be able to teach us, as I don't know any pro's that are going to be here! LOL.

My family said they would love to come! I just have to find a critter sitter before I can confirm it for sure, but I don't think that will be a problem. We will bring a tent or bunk out in the back of the truck so as not to tear up your field with the "tin can palace". How about I bring some goodies to do a homemade herbal beauty and bath demo for the gals (or the really sweet smelling guys for that matter!)? We will also bring pumpkins and I'll pull together a craft or game to contribute to the fun for the littles. My son wanted me to ask if there will be any boys close to his age to play with. He's 8.
Do you want to have a potluck supper, or should we just bring camp-out food for our own families? Again, Bob, thanks! It's so generous of you to invite us!

The herbal thing sounds great, but I think us men will be busy shooting, scratching, and sweatin'...
Hold off on the pumpkins, I think I can get a pallet of them, I will let you know as we get closer. My oldest son is 5, the neighbors may be here also, their son is 6, but there will be some kids here his age I would imagine.

I THINK we're in. The original friends I mentioned can't make it, though. BUT, we'll probably bring along another friend. She was supposed to go camping with us at Hocking Hills...couldn't really leave her hangin'!
I haven't figured out what in the world I could do to teach anyone anything. I have a couple of dutch ovens, though, in case you'd like me to use some of your yummy apples and make some pies.
I suppose I could show everyone how to do a bad job of butchering a chicken!
Mike, I'd love to learn about bees!
MelissaW, my face can use all the help you can give it.

This is sounding like more fun all the time! Bob -- If you could give me a ballpark idea next week of how many kids you think we may have I can still come up with a craft idea for them if you'd like.

LOL! That just makes me think of the story in Carla Emery's book about being asked to do a chicken buthcering demo at the fair, and then being handed some poor "volunteer" chicken and a DULL knife! Too bad my naughty rooster already paid his debt to society. I could have brought him in for the demo.

Will do as best as I can... there's no telling how many will ACTUALLY show up! If we have a cold snap it may be just me sitting around a fire while everyone else chickens out! LOL!

Folks are welcome to stay saturday night also. I will be on a "mini-vacation" from my duties at my church and am actually going to be visiting another church on that Sunday morning. So for a few hours Sunday I will be gone, but you are welcome to stay, cause I will be back!
So far it's sounding good and fun! Man I better get busy around this joint.

Well, I was pretty much kidding...my first experience was last year with a dull knife. I FINALLY got the thing killed, left it to hang and bleed out, and went inside to sharpen my knife. I sharpened it, went back outside, grabbed the next little nasty Black Star, applied the same pressure and whacked the head completely off...sort of freaked me out...I was just planning to slit its throat. It was sort of odd to have a detatched chicken head in my hand all of a sudden.
If anyone else would like to demonstrate how to do it well, I'd be much obliged!

I think "well" is relative, maybe some have never seen it done so to those folks you'll look like a pro, I am sure you would do just fine. I do my own turkey but can't say its purty when its done. Do you scald and pluck or skin them? Maybe we could set up spit and roast it over the fire.

I agree.
I need new fingers for my plucker (keep meaning to do that...) but I am sure we could come up with some friendly butchering activities.
Hey, I was wondering, do you think some people from Ohio don't know about this thread because it didn't say "ohio" on the title???

And another thought, anyone who doesn't know how to do canning? I mean it's a basic thing, but is there anyone that's intimidated by it? We will have plenty of people here who know how to do it.
(Amy's canning chicken soup [sans noodles] so it just reminded me).

Or, loads of people might come and you will be saying, "what did I get myself in to?", lol! You must have a very sweet and agreable wife!
Did you all decide if you want to do a potluck or not? Nothing is more fun for me than whipping out the recipe collection and spending a day in the kitchen, so the prospect of a good old covered dish supper gets me giddy!
Would any of the other cooks like to do a recipe swap while we're together? We could bring a several copies of our favorites and share.
