Not me!

(who is on her way to the animal shelter in Calgary to adopt as many of those "city cats" as possible... )

Country Doc, I believe you.
We were about to fillet some large mouth bass several years ago, & found a small cottonmouth crawling out of the mouth of one of the fish. They were in a 5 gallon bucket & just as my husband reached in for a fish, he saw it sticking it's head out of the water. Fortunately, it didn't bite him.
He caught one another time that had a big rat inside it.

Tracy, are you farm or city? If city, please, please keep them indoors. They roam, they attack songbirds and snakes. They poop in flowerbeds and gardens.
I'd take a snake over cat feces in my gardens any day.
I came across a baby garter the other day. It was the first baby I've seen in years.

No roaming cats here -- I know the damage they can do. In this area, though, any "free" cats aren't free for long -- they become coyote lunch in a quick hurry.

My rather tongue-in-cheek comment had more to do with my inborn shudder-reaction to snakes (and a possible solution) rather than any true intention to go and adopt a dozen cats. It just struck me as funny that you were saying "city" cats... I had visions of very proper purebred pussies dining on garter snake... it struck me as funny. Funny doesn't come across as well in this medium

[QUOTE=suburbanite]It's one of the many varieties of aquatic garter snakes we have on this continent, probably a western terrestrial garter snake (yes, they do like water), which has wide variations in color. Here is a pic of a western terrestrial garter snake with color similar to the one you found:

Why are so many afraid of snakes? I actually became the snake-wrangler at work this summer...no one else would touch them! It was rather amusing to hear, over the hand held radio, "Jen, snake at the waterslides!" (or go-karts, mini golf, etc.) I even had customers remember me from trail rides..." Aren't you the girl who jumped off your horse and caught that huge snake last year?" Yep, that was me Someday, I'll have to get pictures of some of the stupid things I do

Beats me, I think they are cute! I even like the way their scales feel, but I'm pretty tactile. This one is only a garter snake too, not like he's gonna kill ya.

Lucky s/he didn't musk ya when you held them up though!

Snakes are one of my favorite critters. I have to say that I haven't been around anything other than garter snakes in years.

If I catch one on the way to pick up the boys from school, I will slip it in my pocket and show it to everyone at school. The snakes get returned where I found them. But showing the kids gives me a chance to do my little spiel about protecting them, etc.

I know city cats/farm cats seems kind of funny.
I just try to make it clear I see a distinction between farm cats, who tend to be more of a useful farm animal. Cats in urban/city areas are hunting for sport.
Otherwise people here sometimes get upset thinking I am bashing barn cats.
I had to resort to trapping cats in my yard this year. They've been harrassing my chickens and causing stress bloodspots in the eggs. I can't sell off my extras when that happens.
