Bare I will tell you from my experience now in the army you are right! The fact is their are quite a few folks serving with me that were retired already had their letters or were expecting them anyday and they were "stop lossed" and forced here Before we were field artlilery now we are Police so no one can tell me they were indespensable they had to go to police type training just like me also their are plenty of others myself included that were due to get out and when they found out about this deployment they Involuntarily extended us despite the fact that their were plenty of other folks who volunteered all over the state that wanted to come Now it seems many of those that had wanted to come with us went to Iraq or our headed that way shortly. I was due to get out after a one year trial in teh guard on june 6th last year and just about the time I was getting out they found out about us going active on aug 21st and here I am. Unless something happens that is extrodanary I should be home in DEC and when my terminal leave is over I am done with the army for good, family/wife and kids are to important and I miss my garden/homestead also I have 6 years active and one national guard but their are just way to may future deployements in the pipeline it is not like before where folks could do 20 years in the guard and not deploy. Can you belive they asked us all the other day if any of us wanted to volunteer to go to Iraq after this LOL In the army In my case and I think all who came in my time frame they required people to do 4 years in the inactive ready reserve after the enlistment, I did that during my break in service and then came in the guard one month to late if I had come in the guard a little earlier I would not have had to go thru the complete physical junk again.

My son (now 26) spent his 18th birthday on a bus to AF bootcamp. He has been in ever since. He is staying in because he can't beat the money he is making. His cars are paid for and he has no other expenses except for child support. The service is hard on young married couples. He was in saudi for 8 months While his wife stayed home and spent every penny they had then went home to her mother. He spent another 6 months somewhere near Bagdad. He was in England for 4 years and has been in New Mexico the rest.He gets frustrated with the red tape at times but has moved up in rank as quickly as he can and has managed to get almost 4 years of college along the way.He will be eligiable for retirement before he is 40 and will still have time for another career if he wants.
The only problem with it is that his mother doesn't get to see him as much as she would like

That is the truth we have had an untold number of divorces during our deployment, My wife tried that with our $ but when I came home on leave last NOV I put all the bills I could on auto pay and cover the rest by paying with checks and overpaying to leave credit because of the mail situation, I put DW on a seperate acct. and transfer her $ every month, LOts of the other guys wonder at that but I have plans for us and will not see our Money frittered away.

Ooops.

Yes it is commonly called 'Female seperation pay', but I see that on the DFAS webstie they are calling it 'Family seperation pay'.

I am familiar with our requirements for it though. Every month that is spent out to sea with no females present, we all get paid this one extra pay. Go into port once during that month, and you do not get it. Go out on a vessel with females and you do not get it.

So to my understanding, is what we called it was closely linked to how you got the pay.

Though a few years have gone by. perhaps it has changed by now.

I presume that today you would qualify for it perhaps for each month that you spend entirely away from your family?
