Connected today, and big upgrade from dialup or nothing or the library in the past 3 months, so you'll be hearing a lot more from me now. And now we can take DH off the suicide watch!

T-1 at work, and Verizon card in the laptop at home. It has wi-fi as well, but I never travel so the wireless card was the best - and cheapest - option for me, since no cable or DSL is available in my neck of the woods. I don't want to pay for satellite and it's less than stellar service either.... my Verizon card is great!
Pam <------------ has no land line either!

So we went on vacation this past week and they wanted $5 an hour for wireless where we were staying. $5 an hour? No way! So we went all week without.
About Thursday the wife looked at me and asked if we could get just an hour and split it, 30 min a piece? I really thought long and hard and stuck to my guns! 7 days without the internet!
So what did I learn?
1) Being without the internet sucks. Can't check the checking account balance, and who still manually balances in the little book that comes with your checks? I tried to keep track in my head and was within $100. I thought that was pretty good!
2) I had to watch the Weather Channel for the local weather. Local on the 8s I think they call it. Sometimes had to wait 10 whole minutes to look at the local radar. I have been connected for several years now and aways have had the local radar at my fingertips. Wow, perhaps a 12 step program for me? Drove me nuts!
3) A phone book had to be used to look up the phone number of a resturaunt. What is that about? The other thing I learned is the yellow pages does not have spell check. And I can't speel to well!
4) I had to watch the news on TV. Instead of skimming over the useless headlines, I had to wait for the news story I wanted.
5) I had some questions on fishing and crabbing, laws and limits... I had to drive to a tackle shop and get a copy of the regulations. No click and print here!
So I am on high speed and didn't really realize how much I used the internet.
And you?

I can't imagine denying my wife anything that only cost $5.

I'll run a speed test on it tonight and let you know for sure what I get at my house, but last time I tested it was around 550 - 600 Kbps. That was at my BIL's, though, and we were comparing my card to his satellite. The Verizon dial-up also connects to a Venturi server, which is an optimizer of sorts, so it depends on how that's running too.
I won the speed test, BTW...

Yea, that is so I could afford the ring she wanted to buy that week. And trust me, it was way more than $5. I guess it is in priorities...

I have my cell service with Verizon already so it they made it a package deal and I pay about $55 each month for the second line - which basically it is a second cell phone. My total bill for both phones runs about $120. The card itself was around $100, but had a $50 rebate, and that's a one-time expense. It also had a 15 day return policy - if I didn't like it, I could return the card and cancel the service without any problem.
I checked this morning and it was running about 700Kbps download, and 350 upload. Some days are better than others, but they're ALL better than dial-up!! LOL!!
Pam <----------- thinks it also depends on local cell activity

Nice, I will have to remember that option if I ever move where there is no broadband. That's as fast as or faster than my satellite I used to have.
I have cable now, which is just the best possible short of a dedicated T1 at my house.

Probably THE ONE and only thing I miss about being closer to the city - no cable! Oh well, I spend too much time in front of the TV as it is...
Pam <----------- misses some channels, but not enough to buy a dish!

No internet at home and will not get it even if we have the $ as I am afraid it will take away from the time I should be spending on homestead activities and playing/teaching my lovely children. I will stay in touch with Ya"ll from the library when I can probably weekly in the summer after I sell at the farmers market and rarely in the winter. The only reason I am on so much now is because I am deployed and spend just about all my free time on it and a lot of the time I am on call when I am using it. I did not even use computers till 96 at all, I will miss them and interacting with Ya"ll but my family and productive out door activities are more important to me.
