hehe I also have a skunk streak--I think it's cool! I generally don't give any thought to getting older. It's a terminal thing for all of us so why fight it? I'm me and I've enjoyed each age I have been through. (well... come to terms with the high school years anyway) I don't desire to go back and relive a time, but cherish what has been given to me. I respect the elders in my life and try to learn from their wisdom. I find it difficult and strange to see someone fighting a natural process. To keep chopping at and having color of the week of ones' hair is...hmmm...well, disturbing to me. But that's just me.
My dhs' Grama lived to be 100. Her hair in her youth was black but by then had beautiful shots of silver gray going through it. It was long and she kept it in a bun. It was so incredibly soft. It was a priviledge when she let my daughters brush and comb it one day while visiting her.
I'm 46, my hair is waist length. I love the color God chose for my hair and have never even thought of dying it. I figure if He chose it, it's good nuf for me. It was white blonde when I was 2, turned brown and now has shots of white/gray going through it at the top of my head and while the underneath is still brown, there are, oddly enough, a hint of reddishness, when the light hits it just right. I usually wear it in a single braid, although I love two braids and I wear a scarf for every day and a nicer crocheted covering for church and dressier occasions.
Now, my oldest daughter was born with black hair, it turned white blonde by the time she was 2. From then til about 12-13 it was brown, then at 15-16 it turned bright yellow blonde and one side all broke off up to her ear. The other side was still waist length. Well, she had to trim it up so she had short hair for a while. Still the yellow blonde color. Now she's 21 and it's growing in a dark brown with red shot through it. It is so thick that it is spongey when wet and takes all day to dry naturally, if she uses a hair dryer, it still takes a couple of hours to dry. Don't have a clue why it has turned all these colors, she never dyed it but has liked it that it has been all these colors.
Our next dd has light golden brown waist length hair. She cut it once and donated her hair to locks of love.
I hope it's not expected for women to cut it off at a certain age. I'd be a rebel anyway as I loathe those shaved short doos. Short of illness or natural hair loss, I don't expect to cut my hair again. I remember attending a seminar for a make-up and as the women stood to be assessed almost every one of them were being told (recommended) they need to get their hair cut. I was the only one who stood there and told them I liked my hair the way it was and they would not be touching it. They were sort of taken aback, but for me, NO ONE comes near my hair with sharp cutting implements.
God bless.

My wide has short white hair. Her hair is very thin and short hair is cooler for her.

She always told me that as a woman becomes more assertive her hair gets shorter. There maybe some truth in that when women have their hair long to attract or please men rather then to please themselves.

Ha! Not likely. I have long hair only to please myself. And only interested in my hubby and tend to be a hermit. So don't believe rumors.

If short hair makes a woman MORE assertive, then I am sure there are those who would beg me to keep mine longer!

My DH's sister and SIL have very close-cropped hair. They are neither of them very assertive at all. In fact, one of them even SOUNDS like a mouse when she speaks... EEK! (Oh, how I hate it when women talk like itty-bitty-girls... "ARGH! Find your VOICE, woman!" I want to say. And in this one's case, I'd pitch in for the voice lessons.)

ANYway.

I wear my hair long to please myself. It is an added bonus that it pleases my DH no end. And it is my pleasure to please him, because it is his pleasure to please me.

I started growing out my hair when I was 11....had it for 32+ years.... It fell to the middle of my calves....Then, almost four years ago, cut it off...went bald for a bit, and then started letting it grow again....will probably never let it get that long again[my sister measured it a few years before I cut it, and it was 48" from the crown to the end]. Once I got it cut, I quit having headaches....I loved my long hair...but by the same token, I love not having to haul that much water!! One thing that really bothered me after I cut my hair off, is something that a co worker said to me. He noticed that my hair was growing back out, and said, "So, you decided to grow your hair back huh? I think women should ALL have long hair." I told him, if like long hair so much grow his own then........................... I'll have to dig up some pictures of my long hair....I was so proud of it....oh, and I don't do the coloring thing either, only once, and that is one mistake that I'l never, never make again.......I've earned every one of my grey hairs..... I am also one of those that doesn't let someone else dictate to me, what to do about my own person............

Wear a style that flatters your face and is easy to take care of .

Who cares what people think. I wouldn't give that a second thought.

Wear it the way you like.

At this point, I would say that if you have short hair, we know you are old. I don't know where you long haired women are keeping yourselves but I never see any and I for one, am going to have long hair all my days! As soon as I cut it, I know I am old just like everyone else who cuts theirs is old. Short hair on women now equals old so I decided that I would never cut mine. It doesn't make any one look younger! What a falsehood! I am 30 and it is to the middle of my back and no one ever fails to card me for cigarettes. I bet if I cut it, they'd never card me. I won't join those ranks anytime soon!

I'm 48 and have long hair to the middle of my back. It is a blondish brown with a hint of red and lots of grey streaks. I get LOTS of compliments on it and I will never cut it short, hubby would shoot me if I did. He loves my hair. He is 50 and also has long grey hair. His is quite attractive as well.

You do whatever makes you happy....I was just talking about the situation in Canada. While I was reading the other posts, I remembered that most of the women I know with super short hair are also built like bricks so it is hard to tell if they are women or boys from the back. A sexy woman, shaped like a woman with short hair would look good. Very few of the woman where DH is from look like Susan Powter.....

I know alot of the older women especially Italian and Greek wore long hair. I've seen it when we went to church. I have long hair, waistlength, getting grey. I too have earned each and every one! I have naturally curly hair and my mother always said that I could never have long hair because it would take the curl out...still got it's curl...She used to have her's cut at the local barber shop and it never ever got it's curl back...I had short hair once and once only. Dorothy Hamill cuts do nothing for natural curly hair except make it stick out every which way. and just in time for school pictures too...I've noticed the trend too to get a certain age and lop it all off. Not gonna be me!

Please. Short hair does not make one old, anymore than long hair makes one young. Stereotyping is wrong either way. It's about preference and what makes YOU feel good. Not what society tells us to do or not do. And short hair IS sexy if YOU think you are sexy in it. Ask my BF, he thinks my short crop is very cute.

i dreamed of having my hair long my whole life. unfortunately it is so thin, like baby hair that it is not possible. can't grow longer than shoulder lenght and i start loosing it and gets even thinner. i gave up and it is short now. i think a person should waer her/his hair in a manner that he/she feels good and comfortable. that alone makes the person shine.

When I was young I wore my hair so short that I had to go to a mans barber shop to get it cut. We are talking over the ears, shaved neck and the top maybe an inch and half long.
When was about 30 I let it start growing out. I am 46 now and my hair is almost to my waist. I may cut off 6" here and there, but will never cut my hair short again.
I don't know what the rest of the world thinks and really don't give a hoot. I learned long ago not to look to others for my happiness. If I like it, that is all that matters.

I think the length of anyone's hair has no connection what so ever to how old or young you feel or are "trying" to be.

Since when is long hair an indication of youth? Nowadays all the kids have butch hair cuts (That's what we used to call them.)

I am another long haired, older woman... just turned 52, in fact! When I was younger, my hair was so long I sat on it when I sat down... I cut it shorter and did the night club scene for a very short year or two, and kept it short for a few years after that while I worked as a teacher in a high school, but have been growing it for close to ten years now... I love it and so does my significantly younger hubby! The trick to growing out hair is to braid it - baby fine or naturally curly - if it tends to break or tangle, braids will keep it growing... you can start with french braids even when it is still fairly short... I learned this by accident - when my daughter was an infant, she would grab fistfuls of my hair and I started braiding in sheer self-defense!

I'm 45, and I wear my hair short. I would love to wear it long, but after many years came to the realization that I do better with short hair. It has nothing to do with anything other than the type of hair I have, and that I hate having to mess with it. My daughter wears her hair quite long, and she loves spending an hour every morning on her hair. She also loves makeup and clothes shopping - I'd worry she was switched at birth, but she looks so much like her father. We joke that maybe I'm not really her mother!

My hair is very thick and curly. Someone mentioned having to make several warps with a binder, I have to get extra large ones so I can get them around once. Unless I spend a lot of time with it, I look like I stuck my finger in a light socket. It would take hours to dry, and using a blow dryer only resulted in even more "body" I could never wash my hair at night, or I'd have a flat side. I even resorted to sleeping with a nylon stocking over my head in hopes of taming my hair down.

So now I wear it short. About 1-2" at most. I wash it, towel dry and walk away. It curls nice naturally, and I ignore it.

Cathy
