i tried to search for the story i saw on tv about the mystery animal i mentioned. it was in maryland and not virginia. the mystery was allegedly resolved when authorities captured a young red fox with mange. there was footage taken by an individual that is different than the mangy fox that was captured. i see links to the mystery animal footage on the wbal channel 11 website but cannot get them to play.

i change my opinion. the animal in the stills from the video i mentioned looks more like a hyena than the animal in this thread. maybe this animal is some sort of wolf hybrid.

It does appear to have Chow influences with the upstanding ears, the course coat and the inside of the mouth looks to be black. I don't know it must be crossed with but I wouldn't think wolf right away for 2 reasons. First, at only 50 to 60 lbs. that would be rather small as a wolf is larger and a chow is a largish dog. Second, the coat would be too short for a chow wolf cross as they both tend to have thick coats but it is summer and that could account for the coat.

Whatever it is, it is very unattractive to put it lightly. In the first picture with it's back toward the camera, it looked like a cross between a goat and a sheep with a long tail.

Does anyone know if any DNA samples were taken of this animal or if any measurements were done? I would think that would be the place to start.

probably caused by garlic deficiency in the maine cuisine. the more garlic you eat, the fewer werewolves you encounter.

Gee, the SunJournal must've been really hard up for news stories that day! I wonder how much the reporter got paid for covering that story.

I can't access the story so I'm not able to see what the article says. If it does say the DNA mentioned is from this animal it's wrong. This dog was killed just last weekend. Results wouldn't be back this quickly. There were no DNA samples taken. It was left on the side of the road where vultures and other things devoured most of the carcass. Someone from the Sun Journal did take parts to consider testing. The DNA they're talking about was probably from a wolf hybrid killed in Maine by a Pennsylvania man who mistook it for a coyote. That was 13 years ago.

They don't look much like a dog's eyes. They look kind of human. Creepy.
Maybe...this explains it.

I don't think any DNA was collected from this animal. It says the vultures picked it clean. They were referring to another animal from years ago.
