While reading these latest posts, I noticed she was also reading this thread....but it appears she didn't respond. If it was in fact her I'd hope that she would let us know if she was in fact "hijacked" or if these really are her words.

she didn't violate any rules. sounds to me like she may be a wannabe, that doesn't really know what she is talking about.

i think we should give her the benefit of the doubt for the time being?

some people are too quick to take offense sometimes.

Back in the day, everyone died alot younger. 60 yrs old was ancient.

Women don't have it any tougher than men. Go on a cruise ship and count the number of widows. Then count the number of widowers, if you can find any. Whatever life was like 100 years ago...well...get over it. You weren't there.

Back in the day, when you lived miles from your nearest neighbor out on the prairie, you couldn't just put an add in the paper and hire a grunt to do chores. You had kids. That was your labor force. No video games or skateboards. Gather eggs and firewood. Fetch water. Hitch up the horses to plow. Harvest acres of food. Shuck corn and peas. Shovel manure. One or two people can't do all that by themselves and live very long or happily.

Today, homesteaders may say you can. And I'll bet you they still go out and buy stuff they don't have or grow. Can't do that when you're out in the middle of nowhere. You only have each other and what you can make, gather, or grow. If the crows eat your corn, too bad. Start looking for lizards or something 'cause you won't have anything in the winter.

I vote for getting over how tough anybodies life is....man or woman.

I don't necessarily see myself as a homesteader or a homemaker and while I hope to be able to see myself as a successful hatchery and rancher one day, I plan to hire people to keep the house, to keep the yards, to be my ranch manager, nanny if that ever comes up... My plan is to prosper in such a way that I can hire people. I have spent a lot of time in truck stops, writing and have met so many sad cowboys... (I'll be on the road preaching)
Did you meet any cowgirls? If not ..that might be why the cowboys were sad.

I was not raised in the country. I can't grow anything to save my life but I can raise living things and collect wild things. I do attempt a garden every year but something happens to it every year.... like weeds start growing in it.
If you can't grow anything you plant ..then plant weeds.

Anyway, I like to start things, oversee things but give it to someone else for day to day care becuase it makes them happy.
Did you start this thread with the plan that you'll give it to someone else to care for?

A homesteader by your seeming definition is a jack of all trades. But I am not going to be that becuase I don't believe that spreading yourself so thin is the way to be successful at anything. It seems then that you only accomplish a little of everything thus you get caught up becuase with ranching there is always a little of everything left to do. I have lists every day of things to accomplish and while I am wandering about doing my list, I see 20 other things that need to be done too and if I don't watch out, those things will ensnare me and get me off track.
What do you want? What is your plan? Where do you want to be?

Too bad my dishes don't have the sweet faces of my lambs or the mop the happy energy of my dog or the dust rag the devotion of my chickens... At any rate and lastly, I hope, it seems good to employ people, to give everyone their tasks to do and then everything gets done under the watch of many eyes and the labor of many hands. I suppose that is why you guys have children.

Aha! I finally found a topic. I went through our family history book the other day with my grandma and it was so weird becuase the whole book back to the 1600's read" and she had 10 children and died at 36...." Or 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and died at 41, 45, 37... etc... By 36, my grandmother's mother had gone through about 13 pregnancies and after the twins the doctor said, have no more babies or you will die. She got pregnant and she died as soon as the critter was born. I remarked upon all these women dying from having kids and dying young, not a one of them made it past 50 years old! and my grandma said, "they worked them to death and they screwed them to death." So you see, that is actual homesteading, killing your wives.. that is the actual country and that is our history and your forefathers killed your foremothers and so on. And what is to account for that, really? have 5 accidents rather than not care and kill your wife who dies a little faster by the pregnancy? It makes me mad but real homesteading can be measured by the women and how long they lived. We don't feel that at this point so you may find this disquieting becuase we don't kill our wives in the same ways these days and things are a lot easier with technology but the people who came before you and did the harder version of what you are doing croaked a whole lot faster. In every generation, women are forced to do everything men do and then all the women stuff too. God made them stronger in an undeniable way and I am no feminist either. I wish, for my line of business, that God had made me a man, how much easier it would be...
..What is your line of business ..and why do wish you were a man? And why did you said "we don't kill our wives.."?

So there you go, my first homesteading topic although we are so far removed from actual field work that I don't think it will really impact us the way it should, these lessons of the past of women bearing children and hitting the fields the same afternoon and all of that together killing them off in their youth. And while I was raised in the city, I am the first of my generations to be so.
I wonder if this is some kind of 'field test' for you ..to give you a glimpse of how people might react to a book you are writing?

I think you write quite well ..jump from subject to subject ..rambling on about not much in particular ..yet actually having something to say. And you seemed to have held this reader's interest all the way through your post.

Perhaps if that is a glimpse of your true writing style ..and you ever do write a book ..I might enjoy it cover to cover.

What I meant was, if you do like Angie mentioned, and check her other posts on the other boards, it sounds like a different person. So either she has another personality inside of her, or someone is logging on to her HT account and made that post this morning. She seemed concerned about her animals in the animal forums. Now on this one, she is poking fun at homesteaders.

Also she said this was her first post, yet it shows she has made 312 previous posts.

I find it hard to believe you have had written work published. The piece you presented is badly written.
I thought it started with some originality but became a little too absurd. It is always a pleasure to read something a little off kilter but I just can not get over the ill chosen words, badly constructed sentences and lack of any structure.
If your wish to have other people do your work is sincere then you may like to consider the services of a professional writer to ghost write your posts.

Kirsten, I need a job. I'm real handy with just about anything - hammers, sawas, building materials, woodstoves, gardening, butchering, housecleaning, cooking, washing clothes (I don't mind wringer washers!), and canning and preserving food. But, I must warn you. If you hire a couple handsome cowboys I just might have to learn how to lasso!

Well, I would certainly give some thought to hiring another michiganian. I won't be hiring for another year though but you could come out and visit. Sounds like your experience is mainly domestic though and most of ranching is vet work in my experience. Well, I might shortly have an extra house... I want my grandparents to move into it but if I am blocked in that regard, you might be able to come out and try to wrangle yourself a cowboy, treesongal.
