I put plain ol' sheet iron around my house. Then I painted it white.
It looks alright to me. I think it helps the house be cooler. Maybe because the heat is reflected?

I have no visible neighbors so it only has to please me anyhow.

Well I have a tin roof and never even thought of replacing it. It was cheap, easy to install, looks nice(burgandy) and last longer than a conventional shingle roof. I have not noticed any excessive heat from it but then again being from ohio our weather is not exactly tropical. If I lived in a warmer enviroment I would probably think twice about it.
