Exactly correct, the producers job is to manufacture drama for the viewing public. Drama, Conflict, and Sex sell tv shows/movies, don't let anybody fool you.
Come on folks, think about this logically. Do you really think mainstream America (read: instant gratification, short attention span, materialistic etc) is interested in seeing a typical "homestead"? I hate to break this to you, but our homesteading lifestyle is boring with a capital B to most folks.
So you go out and milk the cow, fix the fence, tend the garden, live off the grid, can a bunch of stuff, home-school, cut the hay etc. That's good for what, one maybe two episodes (everything is massively condensed time-wise for tv). Right about episode two mainstream America is loosing interest and thinks your "lifestyle" is cute, but boring.
Now what? Yep, time to ratchet up the pressure and manufacture some drama. Remember, Conflict, Drama, and Sex sells. How about we set it up so there is a constant state of conflict between the homesteading women and the city women. Constant bickering, backstabbing, ridiculing, passive aggressive behavior all in an effort to make the other look bad. Yeah, that's the ticket.
These type of shows are typically short life-cycle shows. They embarrass a bunch of people for a couple years, America looses interest, the show gets canceled, and everyone forgets about the show.... except for all your friends, family, and neighbors that is. It doesn't matter what else you have contributed or accomplished in your community, you will always be known as that person who was on that goofy tv show in 2007.

Do the two ladies even see each other during the taping of the show? I would imagine the conflict would be between the family and the visiting mother. Of course I would instruct my children that they had better be perfect or else they would be cleaning the chicken barn for a year. Hmm, maybe two years...

I would think this would be a total RIOT to do myself..oh..if I had the right situation in hand, I'd do it in a second..strike a blow for disabled homesteading women..LOL..my friends would be rolling on the floor laughing their heads off..
Mores the pity..

I've seen a few episodes as I'm sitting at my computer paying bills. Usually the city people are the ones who come out looking pretty bad. They've gotten some pretty shallow princesses and while they are gone and the country mom is at their house, the family has learned some real values. I also saw the one where the religious lady was screaming like crazy too. But I think of the 3 or so I've seen where it's kind of country vs city, the city people are a little more changed. I know many of you aren't interested and that's to be expected. But if I could make $20,000 for a week of work and had a husband that was pretty much qualified to take care of everything while I was gone, I'd think seriously about doing it. I don't have kids or a husband though so I don't qualify. $20,000 could go a long way in supplementing solar panels or maybe repairing the barn roof etc... for a homestead. I don't really watch TV except when sitting at my computer working, but I think it's nice that the lady posted here and giving the opportunity to the board members. But after reading everyone's posts, I'm sure there's something I'm missing.
I will say, I was on a BBC TV production that was aired on PBS and a few of my words were distorted and some of the footage wasn't flattering. They also didn't tell me the air date and were supposed to send me a tape before it aired which they didn't. I wish they had, and I wish parts of it were shot in a different light on the topic (sleep disorder). So I do know what it feels like to be manipulated by a TV company. But I wasn't paid $20,000 either.
But you figure if you just really watch yourself and go in with an open heart and mind and maybe look at it as an opportunity to spread the word of homesteading, help your homestead out a little in the process, and help another family then maybe it'd be worth it to someone here. But what do I know?

Isn't Sancraft single? I think they require a husband in each family, or the concept won't work.
GO FOR IT MELISSA!!!

I think this is a good opportunity for someone here. If I was married I'd go for it. They will probably bring in a lady that 180* difference from what the ladies are here. That would be enough to make an interesting show. 20k in 10 days with an adventure thrown in is not bad.

I don't trust my husband to care for my critters while I'm gone. Now my oldest son I will.

ABC? What's that?
For several years now ..we seldom watch network TV. Most Family shows on network-tv today are most definitely inappropriate for Family!!! The network definition of Family-values ..is as far away from 'values' as they can get away with.
Never forget ..that their primary motive is profit ..an ungodly amount of profit! If something became a choice between their profits and your diginity ..guess which they'd choose?
If they could secretly show you sitting down upon the bathroom throne ..and then getting up again ..they would. From all angles they would ..secretly too ..if they could get away with it. All in the name of profit!
How much will ABC make on one showing? Is it possible they'll make $20,000,000 or more for the one showing? And they'll only pay the homesteader $20,000? Hmmm?

When I'm responding to or participating in a thread, I always imagine that all the people in that thread are sitting around a table talking. Even tough I disagree regularly with people, I try to do it in a kind manner.
It's easy to point out all the bad things about TV when it's just about TV. Yeah most of it's total crap. But a PERSON has posted here and I wonder if she approached you personally and was sitting with you at a table, if you all would be talking to her like this. I think we all tend to forget there is a person behind all these posts. Because we are behind the veil of the internet we feel we can talk to people any way we want to and it just makes me cringe. You guys are being appropriately harsh to a big faceless TV production company. But I'm surprised at the harshness directed towards a post made by an actual person.
But, this has been a sore spot with me for a few months with the board anyway and sorry for hijacking the thread. I just wish people would disagree or express opposing positions in a way that shows that even though they don't care for what the other person is saying, they still care for the other person and therefore will be mindful of their feelings.
I know I would hate it if I posted here asking someone to participate in what I do for a living and people outright called where I work crap. Just my opinion.

I think Melissa is most definately the best candidate as some others have suggested.
I guess us single folks with kids and a homestead arent worthy of being on tv lol. Instead of wife swap or spouse swap we could just trade kids for a week lololol

Oh, oh, anyone notice that she didn't say she wouldn't do it?
I personally think it would be halarious to watch a city person in homesteading... I'm not sure I could do some of the things you all do.
(I have a gentleman's farm. My family is surprised at all I do but...)

I think TAU that you have a point, and
Texas Ranch House was treated that way. But I know the family sure helped the people who did the editing of the show, by the way they acted, but yet, I feel that they were treated unfairly, and im sure that it hurt their lives afterwards.

$20,000 to entrust a stranger with my most valuable people, animals and possessions, and probably does not have the same values as me...
Plus, like a pp, how are they going to acquire all the skills it takes us years to learn to run our place properly?
I would like to see it on TV (I mostly like to see people live and learn about the country life) I just won't be signing up...
If someone from here does, please tell us so we can cheer you on!!
