Aren't duct tape and bungie cords wonderful things! We used duct tape to repair our vacuum hose and when it wouldn't stand up on its own any more, we used bungie cords to keep it standing. Used it like that for about 3 years till the motor gave out.

DH has a wireless outdoor thermometer that if it gets too cold will stop working. To try to shield it a bit, he cut down a margarine container to make a cover.

A couple of pieces of black trim came off my 9 year old car. DH used black electrical tape to hold them in place until he could put a screw in them.

We currently have duct tape holding the bathtub lever in place. The innards aren't working right and the lever pops up while you're taking a shower and the tub fills with water. DH hopes to replace the parts this weekend.

Thanks everyone for the ingeniouios solutions!! You're all my inspiration!

Just thought of another one - years ago, a neighbor's husband was shingling a dog kennel with flattened tin cans he always collected. He's grown up during the Depression when nothing was wasted. His shingles sure made his wife happy as she had been tip-toeing around their garage for years bickering about all the containers full of cans!

Our 1940's house has had no upgrades.
The shower surround was linoleum nailed to studs. As you can imagine, after so many years of showers, the linoleum was coming off in smelly, moldy globs.
So, being unable to buy a new surround, we tore down the rotten stuff and put up heavy plastic!
Showering sounds like being in a tent while it's raining.

I've used toothpaste to patch small holes in plaster (just paint over when crusted).
I use foam pipe insulation tucked into the crevices to keep my slip covers on the furniture.
I use double-sided tape (white paper left on one side) to cover the cracks in the window around my air conditioner to keep the bugs and rain out--matches the trim.
Coke (as in the soda, junkies) is great for degreasing the steel rims on my car.

We've used cattle panels in the garden as a trellis. I used metal posts that I tied the panels to with those plastic zip ties. They make great trellis's as they are sturdy and I could grow anything I wanted alongside them. I grew cantaloupe, pole beans, cucumbers, etc. side by side up the cattle panel and even anchored my tomato plants to them. This idea isn't mine, my sister told me about it, so we did it too!

I wove wisteria vines through "kennel" fencing to make a usable, sturdy gate opening for my garden.

He sure had some things to say as that tree was coming down...

When I was four-wheelin' in IN one weekend, my disconnected anti-sway bar bounced on to my right side brake line. Used a vise grip to roll it over and pinch it shut, then zip-tied the vise grip to the Jeep for the ride home.

Next time we disconnect that 'sway bar, we'll remember to zip tie the bar out of the way.

a wire coat hanger and a pair of piers will fix a lot of things, from holding up an exhaust pipe to making a radio antenna.

I failed my emmisions test because not enough exhaust was coming out my tailpipe, it was coming out the big hole in my muffler. So I went home cut the tops and bottoms off of 4 pop cans and wired the flat pieseces over the hole. I went down about an hour later and passed the emmisions test, wuhoooo!
