Too bad Schrade went out of business.

I've found just the opposite to be true. I broke the pliars twice on the leatherman, and the handle really bites into my hands during tough gripping. I have broken several of the tools on the gerber but never the pliars, and the tools are replaceable. I really like the gerbers fiskar sissors for fine work.

Leatherman Wave.
Bought one for DH many years ago, and he returned the favor. I like that we can send them in for replacement when things get dull (or if the tool is used for interesting applications).

Sharpfinger.
Several years ago I had the chance to do a bit of hunting in Northen Canada. Every guide I ran into carried a couple.
They were rugged, easy on the hands, and it didn't take a diamond hone to bring them back to scary sharp.
I can take a hint...

I am naked without my Opinel (3 inch blade). I have carried many knives over the years. someone gave me a Opinel back in 1986 and I fell in love. I have worn 3 out and am well into my 4'th one. Every knife person I have ever talked into carrying one has switch. They cost under $10.
I have Leatherman but hardly carry it anymore. I used it alot when I was in property management, but hardly need it now. I use the knife many times a day.

Anymore I just carry a folding lock blade utility knife. The replaceable blades make it a lot easier to both keep the blade sharp and not be concerned about putting it to real use. (also keeps me from doing foolish prying things that I find myself doing with a standard pocket knife. The fact that I can flip the blade over and have a fresh cutting edge is nice too. When I need a knife, I want a sharp one now. These type of knives fit the bill
I really don't like leathermen. They end up being a collection of poor tools that can make quick work of stripping or rounding off anything they touch. I got tired of using the wrong tool just because it was the one in my pocket. Not having one keeps me from doing even more damage than I already do.

I have a Winchester multi tool in the door of my X terra and the winchester duo knife in my purse.
I like the leatherman, but didn't have the $ for it.

I love my Leatherman. It was given to me by my sister-in-law as a Christmas present last year and I don't leave home without it.

I came to the same concusion so I leave it in my emergency kit. I have it and a gerber tool. The gerber is actually a better tool. I don't carry either one anymore though.

There is a smaller version called the Leatherman Micra. I was reading all these posts about pocket tools and thinking I didn't carry any of those. I always forget: the darn thing is right there on my key ring! I tend to use it when I need small scissors more than anything else. It's about one third the size of the full deal.
As far as knives, it depends on my clothing. Some knives just seem to go with some types of clothes. For instance, if I'm wearing jeans, I put the Spyderco Shabaria in the right front pocket. I love that knife. The Spyderco G-10 Harpy goes in the left front pocket. (That's the one that gets carried with almost everything.) In dressier pants, the Shabaria generally gives way to the Spyderco Calypso Jr. Lwt. Harpy stays. In shorts, maybe just the Harpy.
One other knife goes around with me just about everywhere. It is the premiere "let go of me" knife. Spyderco Karambit. What a knife. The ultimate for defensive slashing. Short little curved blade wouldn't be any good for actually attacking somebody with a knife but it sure works good in defensive mode. I normally carry the S&W .44 Special in a Wilderness Safepacker which is kind of like a fanny pack. The Karambit goes in the outside pocket.
I have a bunch of other Spydercos. The Mouse is a great carry knife. My first Spyderco carry knife was the Tim Wegner full size but that knife has basically become my deer knife over the last five years or so. I love the Spyderco Military but it is pretty long to carry all the time. Heck of a useful blade though so I deal with it on occasion when I suspect I'm really going to be using a knife. The full size Calypso is a beautiful knife but I always end up babying it so I won't scratch up the micarta handles. And I couldn't resist buying one of the Spydero butterfly knives but that one hasn't managed to leave the house yet.
There are others. I can recommend the Spyderco Rescue series for those of you looking for straight utility. They even make one of those that has a windshield breaking point built into the end. You squeeze the knife in the closed position and the breaker extends ready to swing into the windows.
There really isn't a more useful tool than a good knife!

Most of the time I carry a Barlow single lock blade stainless steel pocket knife. The blade is about 2 1/4". It is thin, flat and light in weight.
If I am going to be spending a lot of time in the woods I carry a Schrade Old Timer Trapper in a nylon belt sheath.
For Christmas io received a Leatherman Wave with case.
I am never without a pocket knife and use it for a multitude of jobs.

Yes, I am glad to see you....but that's a Leatherman in my pocket...a Christmas gift. It has become a part of me. In my dress pants at work I keep it in my pocket. I cannot go to the ranch without it. Then, I wear it on my belt. It's two greatest uses so far are are the scissors for cutting and repairing poly-wire electric fences and the long surgical sharp blade for cutting bull calves.

As far as a multi-tool goes all I've every owned is the original leatherman, which I liked a lot because of its reasonable size (when closed).
Recently I was given a gift certificate for Amazon and was planning on getting a new multi-tool. After a bunch of research I find that these multi-tools have morphed into gargantuan sized "tools" that require one to wear suspenders just to keep your pants from falling down. The size (when closed) on these new multi-tools is just ridiculous for someone who intends on carrying it on a daily basis.
Wish I could find a minimalist multi-tool that was no bigger than the original leatherman. (:

I have an Oreck Multi-tool, and a Swiss Army knife, with all its wood saws.
