Funny animal names ...
So .. about two years ago my DW, her parents and I got three steers to raise as beef. Our kids insisted that we name them ... although we were VERY clear that these were going on the table in a year. Still they insisted ... so we complied.
My in-laws named their two Breakfast and Lunch ... we named ours T-Bone. I still chuckle a little bit as I remember calling out "T-Bone" and having a cow start trotting to me. Maybe I have an ironic or sick sense of humor. :) Just for giggles ... I'm curious if anyone else has used funny names for their meat producing animals. If not, no big deal ... |
Well there was Hambone the Herford boar hog, Then there was Hamburger the Holstein steer, We had Bacon the sow, then there was lambchop the sheep, Both sheep had the same name. Then the jersey calves were named Meat and Potatoes.
|
Oh my gosh! I laughed so hard when I read yours! So funny!
I'm also glad I'm not the only with this twisted sense of humor. That's too funny! |
I have a wether named Chevon.
Kathleen |
Let's see I've had steers named Sirloin, Burger, Well Done, Dinner, and Steak and hogs named Porkchop, BBQ, Ham, and Roast. Too many chickens and rabbits to ever name. I did have three turkeys named Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter once.

Chevon is the word for goat meat, just like beef is the word for meat from cattle, and mutton for meat from a sheep. Kathleen |
My sister and I collaborated once and raised 4 hogs. We named then A, B, C and D and wrote their names on their foreheads with colored chalk when we got them. The thing that is funny about that is this - Her ex-husband married again and his wifes name was Dee. She realized we had a pig named Dee and was madder than a wet hen. My sister always fed Dee extra to see that one get the fattest. HA.
Now my kids have 30 laying hens and my oldest daughter (8) has named them all. Many of them have female television charachter names like Laverne and Shirley, Ginger and Maryann, Mrs. Howell, Mindy, Aunt Bee, Miss Crump, Weezee (Louise from the Jeffersons), etc. Somehow she can tell them all apart... My grandpa named his cows after each grandkid... |
Growing up we had a calf named Jack (we got him from a man named Jack). After Jack was grown and gone (to the slaughterhouse) we would ask Mama what we were having for supper and she was likely to say "Jackburgers" or "Jack steak".
We also had a dog named Steve (got him from a man named Steve). We named two angus bulls David and Goliath, but they ended up being known as Davy and Golly. My duck's name is Lucky Duckie, but we just call her Duckie. And the hens are Miss Scarlett (she's red), Aunt Bea, Aunt Betsy and Randy the Rooster. Hubby calls the aunts "the B's". My granny was known to her nieces and nephews as "Aunt Bea" and my niece used to call Wendy's (the fastfood joint) "Aunt Betsy's" when she was little (we will never know why) so that's where I got my hens' names. My hubby is currently on an "Irish" streak with the dogs. We have: Tom (named when hubby was on a "Huckleberry Finn" kick...we lost Huck (cancer) and Becky (stolen) Tippy (named for hubby's childhood dog) Bonnie Mollie Riley Katie Brawn Drake (so named when we got him) The horses are: Rose (can't remember her very long registered name) Rose's Little Angel (we call her Angel...she is Rose's daughter) Cheyenne (she has a longer registered name too) Shiloh (Cheyenne's daughter) Jasper (our only gelding who also has a big long registered name) Except for the fillies all the horses were named when hubby bought them. The cats just get named willy-nilly: Casper (solid white) Harley (solid black...when we got him he was scruffy and "dressed in black" so the name seemed to fit him) Libby (got her on the 4th of July so she's named for Liberty) Charlie (so named when we got him) Esther (Charlie's sister) Hermione (had gone to see the latest Harry Potter movie and spotted her abandoned in a gas station parking lot on our way home so I had to name her for a Harry Potter character). That's all we've got right now. When we get cows I'm not sure if we'll name them or not. I do know what I'm going to name my goats when I convince hubby to let me have some. I want three goats: Obi Juan Kenobe HEE HEE... |
I have 2 goats named Betty and Paula my 2 xwifes names Makes it eaiser at killing time LOL
|
Three years ago I bought a Saanen doeling & buckling, their names are; Winona & Judd. We have a very nosey kinder goat, her name is Snoopy (aka Eliza P. Snooperton). Snoopy has had 6 pregnancies, all multiple births except for one - that doe is named Uno. Had two beef cows (now in the freezer), but they were Bessie & Belle the Bovine Sisters. Now we have a heifer named Stacey and a bottle calf named Dotty. My hens are just the girls or the chicks. Pigs are Gladys & Glenda. Donkeys are Jack & Jill. My house pets are Bink the cat, Halle & Murphy the Bernese Mountain Dogs, Hermione the Brussels Griffon, Mercedes the lab x and Bishop the Spitz. I have two 6 month old doelings that we have nicknamed Paris and Nicole for thier hijinx!

Oldmanriver- I never thought about it that way - do you think anyone would catch on if I named all my freezer animals Mike?

I named my black australop hen "Orville" after the Wright brothers. I thought it was funny because chickens are as bad at flying as these brothers were. She was our only pet chicken. We weren't allowed to name all the other ones because they were for food and my parents didn't want to traumatize us by eating our pets.
My friend's kid named his two goldfish "Poop" and "Oreo" because those were his favorite two things in the world. :D |
Just to be sure the kids knew what was going on, our first batch of pigs after the kids came were Bacon, Ham, Pork Chop, Sausage and Holly Hog (because my mom gave me some Holly Hog seeds and I laughed myself silly when I realized they were supposed to be Hollyhocks). DH is as likely to shed tears at pig butchering time as the kids are.
Our male calves started out with names like Chuck(roast), Porter(house), Pepper(steak) but once the first few went through and the kids got used to the cycle of the lives of male calves, we just went with whatever the first person thought of. Now we have Ebony and Ivory, Sugar, Boris (actually, I think we are currently eating Boris), and some others that I can't remember. I just call them things like "Marigold's bull calf." Link is to a few of our old calves with the males down the page. http://www.longshadowfarms.com/cows.html |
My dad once had a nanny goat give birth on the last day of May/first day of June. The babies were a male and female so he named them May and Junior. He eventually sold May and her mama, but kept Junior for a long time.
Silly goat would follow Daddy everywhere...he'd jump over the fence to do so and in the evening Daddy would say, "Junior, go back to the barn" and the goat would go jump back over the fence and go to the barn for the night. For some reason Daddy got tired of Junior and had him slaughtered. He put on a big BBQ and invited the family over. YUCK...the meat was greasy and tough. We were all sitting around the table when Daddy let out a big sigh and said, "If I'd a known Junior was so greasy he'd still be following me around." LOL...Daddy never raised goats again. |
Hmmm, I haven't been naming creatures lately, so lets see what I have...
I have found that if I name roo's with Royality names, they tend to behave themselves better. So I have Charles and Camilla Cochen, there was a William and Harry. I still have to name my Brahma boy (been calling him Buddy) but that's not good enough for him. I have a Thelma and Louise, because they are always on the loose! I think all my boy goats are going to named with N's and the girls will be named with E's, but original E names are difficult to find. |
I laughed when I read RedneckWoman's post, as we had turkeys named Thanksgiving and Christmas for the time of year we would enjoy them. Well, they got into a fight, and Christmas got the worst of it, so we ended up having Christmas at Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving at Christmas. The kids still laugh about this.

My goats are named Jack & Jill. They came with the names. I used to have a cat named Shep. I named my dogs Samson & Delilah. My son named his cats Ed and Peaches. We named a couple of stears named Yummy and Good.
One of my neighbors has 300 head of cattle. Every one of them is named, and he can point them out telling you each of their names! That man has waaaaay to much time on his hands... LOL |
we have Lady Isabella she is the queen,(English mastiff) size rules, then we have Jewels she is mom to Diamond , Pearl, and Ruby, (boston terriers) we have Kitten, smallest cat in the world atleast that i have ever seen. the rabbits are mostly called babies, so are the chickens they all come running when i walk out calling here babies, and then there is Henry as in Hennnnrrrry the rooster. he just loves to strut his stuff when i make his name really long. Animals are so funny. we just ate a few of the rabbits a couple of weeks ago and they really taste like "chicken" they were good we grilled them on the pit. no one complained and enjoyed so i guess we are offical farmers! rannie

Pygmy goats-
We have one that is black and white that my husband named Iapetus (after one of Saturn's moons). Turkeys- November and December Chickens- Had a buff orp named "Blue"- to catch a their I filled an eggshell with blue dye and put it in the nesting box. The evidence stained her for quite a long time. Marie Antoinette- becasue she was so annoying she was certain to get her head chopped off Roosters- The daddy was "Pierre the Big Gay Rooster" - before we got him he was put in a pen with another roo, and let's just say the other was one a little more agressive than Pierre. But, when given a few hens he did his job admirably! One of PIerre's sons was Foghorn (due to his crow) and the other was Houdini, since no matter what we did to his coop, he always escaped! |
I have a rooster named Wilma he hatched out on my gammys 84th birthday.
I have a hen named peggy...she had a bad leg..... If I ever raised pigs they would be Link and Patty. |
Link and Patty...that's funny. When I was seven I named our pigs "Piggly" and "Wiggly" which was the grocery store my mom shopped at every week.

We got a kitty named "tag-a-long". Some time ago (couple years)..shortly after DW returned home from her mothers..she was out in the yard and heard this "mew mew". Turns out a very young kitten had climbed up underneath the hood of her car and rode home under there. I said the kitten could not stay in the house..so DW let it live out with the goats. That kitten would follow those goats everywhere..would sleep with them..lie down in their food bins..and would generally follow them goats wherever they went. So DW named the kitten "tag-a-long"..because it always followed the goats. I said the name fit because the kitten "tagged-a-long" under the hood of her car.
But now the kitty is an all-indoors cat..seems it was seriously hurt one morning..almost died. DW thinks one of the goats must have head-butted it..very hard..as it was severely and painfully bruised..almost to death. So now 'tag-a-long' is a perfectly happy housecat. The whole history of that cat is mighty suspicious..how it just got here by somehow tagging-a-long underneath DW's car..and then how it found a way to be a full-time house cat. Hmmmmmm? |
first three pigs (now in freezer or BBQ) were = Saucy (Sausage), Hot Dog, & Bacon.
Beef calves will be = Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Turkeys = Thanks, Giving, Christmas & Sue.. dont know why Sue lol Chickens too many to name them all. But some are = Stinky, Colonial, Mamma... My boys are strange... Fish named = Steve Dog named = Brad Bunny named = Bob Dog named = SpeedBump (we got him after I hit him w/ my car!) But then their mom has a cat named Philip. lol Thats all the strange names, the rest are "normal" and THATS strange here at our place. |
I had rabbits years ago - and the breeding stock were named. Sometimes their name was changed to "Stew". :p
Let's see: Goats are Polly, her three day old twins are unnamed at this point; Angel and her son, Gabriel; Sara; Bridget and Bronwyn (sisters); Bronwyn's son, Casanunda (World's Second Greatest Lover - and a dwarf), Ivy and Violet, Ivy's twins - just born last night so not named yet either, and Beauty - a nine year old Nigerian who came with the name. I haven't named the hens, ducks or geese, but the roosters are: Patrick because he has a lot of white on him, so a "Ghost" - he was the only one that was named originally and we were going to keep him, but one of the roosters decided to beat all the others up - that one is now "Brutus". The one that came off the least damaged is now in the hen house - he is "Justin" (Just in Case). We used to have a couple of cats named Rodgers and Hammerstein - but we called them by their first names, Ginger and Oscar. :p Another cat started out as The Black Knight, then was Le Chevalier Noir and ended up as Maurice (Chevalier). Now I have Spenser (he looks like a nice thug), Harley - short for Harlequin, and Max - also known as Maximillian Alexander Rottensocks, Lord Baddington. Alexander because he's a little Klingon. I like to give my goats hispanic type names. My three spotted nubian bucklings are Taco, Paco, and Nacho.
|
My Boer buck is named Wolfgang Buck. : ) My llama is Joe Llama, and the newest doeling we have is Aurora, goddess of the dawn. Guess why... : )
We just think that life should be fun! |
Livestock? Had a bullock my lil bro named 'battery charger', a jack named Bubba, and a Paso Fino named Joie de Vie.
Current pets are Frodo & Pippin (feline), & Ted & Shemane (rodents). Wife named her poultry once, once was enough, after I labeled the frozen packaging with their names! :) |
Funny animal names
I had a Apaloosa horse named "Brat". Had her for 21 years. Her registered name was "Joker's Olathe". Also once had a cat named "spencer" and she had some babies. The one we kept was named "spencer's baby".

Over the years I've had a leghorn rooster named Henry, tom turkeys always named Dave, a mother/daughter cat combo called Mama Cat and Cat, a Lhasa Apso named Jewel of the Yangkwetza (Foreign Devils) of GarTen, Nebucadrezzar the greatest cat who ever lived.
My first beef steer we named Mr Tallman, after William Tallman who played DA Hamilton Burger on the old Perry Mason show. The ones after him have been Nigel and Orlando. The current cat is named Francesca Fiore, from Kids in the Hall. Her brother was Bruno Ponce Jones, but he had a loosing argument with a car. The alpacas are Meshack and D'Artagnan. |
My little turquoise colored Easter chick, gift suprise, wouldn't hush up because he was by himself. I asked him, Bluebie, please hush up and the name has stuck even though he's now white with beige and black feathers.
Years ago I had a feeder pig I named Oinkabod Corn, Oinky for short. Then there was the dog named Useless that was very far from useless. She was the best dog I've ever had or known. |
We had two sheep called Polly and Esther, a rooster called Englebert Humperdink and a steer called Chuck. Also once had a scottish highland bull called McDonald.
|
Only those we plan to eat get food names... like Hammy and Chops (pigs) and Tasty (steer).
Our breeders are named "normal" names. Stella (pig) and Dorothy (heifer). Some aren't as original. We have a buck rabbit named, of all things, Buck. The doe is fawn colored so we call her fawn. A less creative day when I named them, I guess. The chickens range from personality names to silly stuff. A rooster that had a very close call with a chicken hawk left him with some feathers bent straight up.... we call him Alfalfa. His broodmate, a hen, is black so we named her Buckwheat. Too many chicken names to list here, but KING JAMES is truly King of the Roost. He's a big, beautiful rooster. Quite the gentleman to the hens, and very much the challenger of chicken hawks. He stands his ground with them. He also slaps the other, smaller roosters around when they get too rough with the hens. |
I forgot...I had a rabbit named Noodles

I can't name all of our animal names, we'd be here all day, but here are some that we get a giggle out of:
Macaroni--big white and orange cat (When we brought him home as a kitten he promptly got on the table and helped himself to a bowl of Macaroni and Cheese) Buff Orpington hen named "Buffy the Egg Layer" White cochin pullet that got pecked on the head too hard as a chick--"Dizzy" When she gets excited she runs in tight little circles. Have a frizzled cochin in the same batch so had to call her "Frizzy" Now I've got to decide which one is "Lizzy" There are three more cochins. Or I could come up with more "Izzy" names. |
I once owned a three-legged dog I named Tripod. At the vet hospital where I work, we have a three-legged cat, her name is Easel...... :)
