You can count me in too depending on which weekend in August. If your thinking mid-Michigan in August there is a MBGBA Poultry and Small Animal Swap meet in Clare at Yoder's Blacksmith Shop on August 19. That may be a nice tie in for some people who are coming from a distance. Kind of a kill two birds with one stone. Anyhow, DH and I are interested.

I think anyplace south of Big Rapids is not fair to those who live near..or in..the Upper Peninsula.

For example..it is 158 miles from Niles to Midland..147 miles from Midland to Mackinaw City..but only 105 miles from Detroit to Midland. Quite a difference in favor of Detroit!

On the other hand..it is 150 miles from Detroit to Big Rapids..131 miles from Niles to Big Rapids..and 148 miles from Big Rapids to Mackinaw City. These are much more alike in distance than the Midland example.

..And we haven't even crossed the Mackinaw Bridge yet.

So..from a "fairness" vantage-point..Big Rapids is much more central to everyone living in the Lower Pennisula.
But then..in order to be truly fair to the Yoopers..we'd have to go even further north of Big Rapids.

Anyway..right now I'm thinking somewhere in the vicinity of Big Rapids..Cadillac..Harrison..Houghton Lake...or anywhere between these cities..just to be fair to everyone.

Comments anyone?

Now's the time to place your suggestions!!!

Two questions:
1) Overnight campout or day trip... or both. (depending who can.)

2) Where??

I can only spend a day. I would like someplace between mackinaw, and midland. Gaylord might be a good place. Its right on I-75 wich would make it fairly easy to get to for a lot of people. IF it was a one day thing everyone would be welcome ot come to my place. Im about 15 miles from 131.

I thought of Gaylord too but any area chosen will be an inconvenience to someone. Perhaps a....vote? In my very humble opinion, anything "up north" would be great because it is so beautiful up here. And, maybe a short getaway is something we all need. If all goes well this year, the get together could be in another location next year more suitable for others who can't go because of distance, etc.

Kaza, what do you think?

Gaylord sounds good to me.... I'll look up campgrounds in the area.

Now... Everyone who's intrested...

1) Does Grayling sound ok for this year?

2) Who wants a campout and who can only come for a day?

Quispea... is it the distance? Yahoo says it's the same distance from where you are to both Midland and Grayling.

What's everyone else think?

I'm going to let the vote go for 1 week. So next Thursday (June 29th) We'll know where it'll be and hopefully how many will be camping and how many will be comming for the day. If you are more comfortable pm-ing your vote, that's ok to.

Do you mean Gaylord..or Grayling?

One thing people like to do is have a variety when they travel..more than one thing to do. Perhaps somebody could do a wee-bit of research to discover what else would be happening in the general area during a potential weekend? I'd be willing to do a bit of research myself even though I won't be able to attend. All I need to know is what area people would agree upon..or a choice of two or three areas..and then I'll look and post other activities going on in those areas in August.

I thought the early suggestion for Clare..and the small animal swap meet..sounded interesting.

Grayling sounds good t me. Have we picked a date yet, the first and second weekend in August are already booked for me, the first Sunday I will be in that neck of the woods so I'd be able to come for the day if your meeting on Saturday. Pot luck? Are we doing any kind of homesteading skills demos?

Michigan HT'ers

Count me in. I seldom post here but read every chance I get. Don't have electric, water or sewer at my place near Reed City. Would like to meet fellow HT'ers. I moved here last year from the HOughton area and much prefer the northern Lower Peninsula as there isn't as much snow. Any weekend in August is fine and any location.

Interactive Map of Grayling and Surrounding Area.

Just click on the town you want more info about. You can keep clicking on each succeeding map to get closer views. Includes Grayling and Gaylord areas.

I can't come due to livestock, milking, distance from home, and various other reasons. But if your gonna meet in the Grayling/Gaylord area....Otsego Lake county Park is very nice. We had our family reunion there, very nice spot. You all have a GREAT time.....sounds fun.
