The "frost-free" is accomplished by blowing air through or out of the freezer to keep moisture from accumulating on the walls of the freezer.

This also keeps your meat nice and dry - when meat loses its moisture and gets dried out, that's freezer burn.

we just went through this. I had an upright in the past with drawers. Very handy. they were closed off with some kind of plastic in front that you could write on what was inside and of course, nothing fell out and you could easily find things in there. Also, when you opened the door and had all those closed drawers in front of you, the cold did not fall out like it does with open shelves. We just bought an upright, because of the space it has to occuppy.

I've had both and if floor space were not an issue I would pick a chest type.

I'm looking for a small chest freezer now, but growing up we used two uprights. The energy usage is less in a chest type, and they hold more "stuff". Best wishes with whatever you go with.
