Around here, you wouldn’t even get a septic system touched for less then 10 grand.

True, true. Point taken. I must admit, I was quite shocked to see the wild variance in pricing, but now that I think about it a bit, it makes sense.

I'll do the necessary calling around.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

The other thing to check is what the rules are regarding greywater in your area.

Where I live, greywater is treated as the same as blackwater - it MUST go through a septic tank-and-field at least. Given that I had to put in a small tank-and-field setup (I have good soil for it), it made no sense to spend the extra $ on a composting toilet. My neighbour, though, has just a small holding tank (so the honey wagon comes and dumps it) and he has the composting toilets. It's a bit of a balancing act - I'll use more water (as I live there full time, his is a cabin) so I don't want just a tank.

For costs, my tank and field was 8K, my well was 10K ... that's Canadian funds. My well's 120 feet deep, too.

Take all your estimates, and when you're done, double it (honestly, you need to) to be safe. 1.5x whatever you think it'll be at the *very* minimum, for planning purposes.

It's a great adventure, welcome to it!

This varies so much from region to region, state to state, and sometimes from county/parrish to county/parrish. The regs (or lack thereof) can affect cost, and so can the soil. If you'll list your location, you'll probably get a better idea from someone living near you. Good luck.

Here in my part of Canada the size of the septic tank is regulated by the number of bedrooms in your home.
