I like MEN and Backwoods Home. MEN is glossy and more yuppified but still has good info. BWH is like sitting down with a good friend and a cup of coffee or glass of sweet tea. I just wish it came out every month instead of every two months. It feels like good friends and family.

Backwoods Home is well worth the money! We've subscribed for years. Jackie Clay is awesome. They always, always, always, have great articles.

Get it! It's worth every penny. I just bought the "Whole Shebang" at their special $99 sale price. I had already gotten the 6th year anthology, so I mentioned that when I called to order. They asked if I wanted to substitue that year with another of their manuals - free of charge. My order just arrived today and I'm looking forward to a full summer of evenings reading on my porch...

Add me to the large chorus of YES!! I've also been buying/subscribing to BWH for YEARS! I have a few of the anthologies, and would love to get more... I DO NOT like MEN....it's aimed at mostly rich people....One of their cover stories a while back was "Build your house for $60,000!!!" If I had that kind of money, I'd build/buy a house, have my scooter up and running, pay off my car, and probably have some money left...........sheesh.....I think one of the best things I love about BWH magazine is their firm belief in the constitution..................

I get BWH but am considering just letting it lapse. Jackie was the only reason I resubscribed last time. The last issue shook my faith in Jackie a bit. It has a picture of her pantry and there isn't a single home-canned item to be seen. What's up with that from the lady who does EVERYTHING herself. I also have a hard time with their "philosophy" and do they really need an overlong article by Masood every issue???
I really enjoy Countryside and Hobby Farm, MEN is too much like Sunset.

C'mon guys Jackie has had a rough go of late...losing her husband, elbow cancer....I think alot of her stuff is still in storage....let her have the store stuff without guilt.....I'm sure the flavor sucks in comparison and she'll soon be plantng and harvesting and restocking with home-made goodies

BWH Anthology is amazing....I'm a happy owner

Jackie has absolutely been through the mill. She didn't have the chance to put in a garden this year, as she was moving, building a new house, burying her husband, and going thru chemo. Give her a break. She'll can again when she has a chance to garden.

Our pantry is full of store-bought, too, because this is our first year at our homestead (couldn't garden at our old place in the city). Being stocked up is better than most folks do.

I like the magazine a lot, and I did get a couple of anthologies too. It's not the same magazine that Mother Earth News was in the 70's, but it provides sustantive information that is similar in nature...maybe a different "flavor" would be a way to describe it.

I like BWH and Countryside best! I will pick up a MEN if it has something of interest though......I really use the MEN archives online. Great stuff. I keep hoping that if I leave enough of 'em (magazines) around, someone ELSE in this household will want to take the leap......

To whoever asked about Back Home Magazine, yes it is well worth while as well. It was started by the old MEN gang after Shuttleworth sold out to the eastern slicksters.

I sunscribe to all three. They are on line as well with much info available online. Check them out.

just wanted to say i agree, i have so many homesteading type books i probably do not need to ever buy another one but i keep subscribing to bhm because i like to read jackie's writings. her running article about their new homestead is the first thing i read when ours comes. she kinda reminds me of carla emery in that you kinda wish she was just sitting in your kitchen chatting over tea/coffee with you.
Ok, am I the only person who has had the thought that after a longer interval passes, Jackie Clay and Don Delong might be a good couple? Since Don lost Carla and Jackie lost Bob, I keep imagining them together.

BWHM is great, also you might try Backwoodsman. It is alittle more "primative".

Jackie has been through a lot in the past year and a half, loosing her husband suddenly and THEN finding out she had CANCER....all while trying to finish her log house AND care for two elderly parents....

Her stories of how she continued through it all have been an inspiration to me! I LEARNED to pressure can through her articles in the past and know that she will be canning and "putting by" everything she can when she is able.

Also, as for BACK WOODS HOME philosophy, one thing that Dave Duffy and the others have stressed from the beginning is preparedness....and that's one thing they continue to stress....taking care of one's own family and not depending on the government or anyone else during an emeregency....and I think the entire nation should have seen during this last hurricane season how important and vital that is....

I don't agree with everything they say but there's too much good in there for me to ever let my subscription lapse!
