OK here is my 2 cents . . . I like Red Stars from MM for brown eggs, however I really want to try Buff Orpingtons - and the best white egg layers are the leghorns, however I have found these birds to be VERY high strung. My hens are theraputic for me, and the high strung behaviors of the leghorns just wasn't cutting it. I like the look of the brown eggs better than white - brown eggs just say "farm" - which is my goal.

We have gone to Black Australorps for laying hens most of the time. We have had Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds also, but the Black Australorps seem to do better in the winter in Wisconsin in an unheated chicken coop. I quit raising white chickens as the hawks seem to find them easier than dark colored chickens--haven't lost any dark chickens to hawks. We prefer brown eggs, so I have no recommendations for white egg chickens.

Apparently not. I was talking to the owner of one of our local feed stores a few days ago. Turns out he has also been searching for organic feed, as he has so many customers asking for it. He can't find any anywhere. He's called all his own suppliers, and every other supplier he can find. He's come up totally empty handed. But he's still on the lookout.
