no I have not found ramps here in Maine, I was talking about the ramps I got in Madison county NC, witch is where I moved from 2 and a half years ago. Have you found any butter-nuts up here?

Sorry Sue, when I said I just moved "out here from NC" I meant Nebraska.

What are butter-nuts?

My uncle and my father in law both used to occasionally make ends meet with ginseng. Nowadays, its alot scarcer where they live (VA). Just a few years ago there a store opened up that had a sign out front which said something like "Top dollar for Ginseng..." Turned out to be a 'sting' operation to catch people harvesting it out of the national forest. I wonder how many people were lured into collecting it by the sign?

foraging for profit - Homesteading Questions

Wild rice is a huge part of the culture in this area. Inter-tribal wars were fought over the wild rice beds.
http://www.sokaogonchippewa.com/ (no direct link) then click on HARVEST and RICE HARVEST to see a romanticized view of things from the Native American perspective.

Today, a casino now sits 1/4 mile from the lake called "Rice Lake" (lake in photo). While the wild rice harvest still takes place today, its importance is largely symbolic. The casino now provides an economic base. The casino provides more of a year around economic boost than the uncertainty of the wild rice harvest.

Times change.
