Why does anyone need sunglasses? I've tried them now and then but can't say there seems to enough benefit to offset the inconvenience. Evidently human eyes are adapted to function in sunlight rather well as long as one doesn't stare directly at the sun (and then glasses short of welders' glass wouldn't help).

Did all generations prior to fifty years ago go blind at an early age due to sunlight damage to eyes?

Safety glasses make sense on occasion (though not each time a person uses a tool that has the mandated warning "Wear Safety Glasses" prominently displayed).

I can't speak for anyone else but I have to have sunglasses or I cannot go outside, at least not in the middle of the day. My eyes hurt- badly- in the bright light. I will walk around shielding them with my hands if I don't have sunglasses. I have read that blue eyes are more sensative to the light but who knows? All I know is it is painful for me.

Lindafisk, I'm just like you. I'm convinced I'm part vampire!!!!! I've been sensitive to the sunlight for the past 10 years (I'm wondering if prescription drugs didn't make me sensitive). I always buy the Viper sunglasses - the ones that wrap around my eyes totally. I can't wear regular sunglasses as the light coming in from the sides bothers me.

I am forever losing and misplacing sunglasses so I always get the cheaper ones. In fact, I just found some Vipers at a flea market that were $3.00 each. They also had polarized ones so I ended up buying 3 pair of those for $20.00. No way would I ever pay $20.00 for ONE pair of sunglasses.

With that being said, however, if by chance I forget my sunglasses I'm in big trouble! The sun light hurts my eyes and I walk around looking down with my hands shielding my eyes.

Even though I buy the cheapies, they darken the light so I can stand it and also block the UV rays. I'm waiting to lose my last pair of regular Vipers before I upgrade to my polarized ones.

I buy the $15 polarized fishing sunglasses from the sports department at Wally World. I've looked at the fifty and sixty dollar (and up!) polarized glasses at places in the mall and the Wally World glasses seem to be just as good so far as I can tell. I'm a little glare sensitive so polarized lenses are a must.

I lose or break my sunglasses at least once a year so the expensive ones aren't a good deal for me.

.....Alan.

A docotr told my parents: "The lighter your eye color, the more susceptible you are to cataracs. Wearing sun glasses can help prevent or at least, delay the catarac growth."

Exposure over time does do damge causing cataracts and such. Also in bright conditions such as snow cover you can suffer snowblindness. That a real hazard in the winter that if you're in an outdoor scenario (hunting hiking skiiing survival etc) can get you killed. I know after being out on the water without sunglasses with bright sun all day my eyes hurt terribly and I couldn't see correctly for a couple of days afterwards. I think it was something like snowblindness.
