Just reread this thread and wanted to thank you for your input, and update what I've done.
A friend at church is a mechanic. After lots of thought and prayer, asked him to do the work.
He inspected her from stem to stern and top to bottom.
Says for her age, she's in very good shape, structurally (if one can use that term for a car).
So far, he's installed a new tape deck (don't have but a couple cds, so a tape deck's better). Got the tape deck at Walmart on sale for $30., down from $60. Universal face cover was $10.
The major problem was not the gas tank but the catalitic (sp?) converter. With inspection, the converter, the tape deck and some body work, so far it has cost around $300.00. I've ordered two good tires and will have a little more body work done. That'll bring the total around $450.00
Took the car on a recent trip. There was no odor of gas and it drove well. So, I think I made the right decision. She's not 'pretty', but I like safe better than pretty!
