I have had llamas. They are great fun. They are great as pack animals, very easy on the environment. There is a good book called Packing with Llamas. They only poop in one place, this can be a problem when packing. Some people bring along a small bag of manure so they will go. They are very good as cart animals as they spook in place. My chickens and turkey roosted on the Llamas. The only time my guys spit on me was when the goats were eating one of the Llamas grain and he got soo mad that he was spitting at the goats..... and I just happened to be in the way. big bummer. It hurt and stunk.

I also have another question about llama's. So now I know that you have to have at least two llama's as they are herd animals. So, if I go hunting and use one llama to carry my treestand, bow/rifle, climbing ladder, backpack, etc., does that mean I have to bring the other llama along so it won't get lonely at the farm? Or, bring the extra llama along so that the one I'm using won't get lonely out there in the woods while I'm sitting high up in my treestand?

As for using goats, I figure I would have to bring at least two cause I don't think one goat could carry everything I take on a hunt. How fun would it be to lead two goats around in the forrest?

I think lamas are a Tibetan specialty . . . Buddhist, I believe. Non-violent, not much good as guards, I would guess, but I'm stretching a little here.

Laura, you're thinking of the Dalai Llama! (Actually female llama is named Dolly ... get it? the Dolly Llama? BTW that was my husband's brilliant idea).

Anyway ... an ungelded male can be aggressive and dangerous. They are powerful ... I have been knocked down by mine! He is a sneaky SOB and used to run up behind me when I wasn't paying attention. Needless to say, I put a stop to that, but if he gets a chance he will still bully my husband, who is too wimpy to stand up to him!

goats are easy to lead-very easy-my 5yo can lead a 150 lb goat almost anywhere-unless she sees food...-a wether, fully grown will weigh about 200 and will be able to carry almost that much weight. they are stronger than they look.
and, yes, there's a chance, if you get the "wrong" llama, that you'll have to take both with you-depends on their personality, but, if they see you as part of the herd, it shouldn't be a problem for the one you take with you.

A wether will carry 25 to 35 percent of his body weight. And the best thing about them is you don't have to use a lead line. They follow you because they LIKE you.

So, Willow, did you misspell "Dalai Lama" on purpose?
