My dh & I have just completed our 1st yr on our 5 acres. We learned alot this past year! We planted a very large garden that provided us with enough for us, for family & friends & some to sell. I did not preserve much as I did not have time and just decided to give myself permission to share & eat the produce. This next year I want to do better. I hope to be able to preserve lots by canning, dehydrating & freezing. We hope to get a few feeder pigs to raise for us & to swap with friends who raise beef. We figure if we each focus on one animal then we can all swap for what the others have. Have friends with layers but no fryers or broilers. Would like to raise some layers & broilers myself but not fure if we want to get into butchering them ourselves. I know we should be able to but after all the years that my df hunted and brought home his game, I've kinda lost my desire to see it again. Anyway, not sure if dh wants to go that far. He's not hunted or fished in years. Have tried to get him intersted again but he comes up with all kinds of reasons not to do either.
We planted pear & apple trees this past year. Hope to plant a few each year. We have a small stand of trees that previous owners planted. A few oak, maples & evergreens. Hope to enalrge that area with some Christmas type trees, more nut bearing trees & some for future firewood harvesting. With only 5 acres & not much hope in future to add on(we are in the middle of huge parcels of land owned by just a few farmers), we need to see just how much we can squeeze out of our land without destroying it. We are composting and adding what we can to help it stay productive. Trying not to use chemicals unless absolutely needed. I am allergic to poison ivy so it has to go!!! We have a huge barn that is not being put to use. It needs some roof repairs & we need to get that sdne before we can utilize it fully. It's not in bad shape just a few leaky spots that need attention soon. We thought to rent it for hay storage.or even boat/ RV's. Need to check into insurance & other stuff first.
am looking forward to what all of you have done or are dreaming of doing on your homesteads! No matter the definition that others give it, a homestead is in your heart!Take care & hope your holidays will be wonderful! Patti
