I think it qualifies as parody:
1 : a literary or musical work in which the style of an author or work is closely imitated for comic effect or in ridicule
2 : a feeble or ridiculous imitation
(that Merriam Webster is one smart cookie)
or analogy:
1 : inference that if two or more things agree with one another in some respects they will prob. agree in others
2 a : resemblance in some particulars between things otherwise unlike : SIMILARITY b : comparison based on such resemblance
3 : correspondence between the members of pairs or sets of linguistic forms that serves as a basis for the creation of another form
4 : correspondence in function between anatomical parts of different structure and origin -- compare HOMOLOGY
synonym see LIKENESS
Depending on what particular bend the author is putting on it.
Either way is within a moderator's poetic license.
(Go on Cabin, show 'em your license!)

I see nothing wrong with Cabin Fever's topic..nothing wrong at all. While I do think it is as stupid as cherry flavored gasoline..there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Just stupid.

Yeah, you're probably right...stupid me.
And whether what I tried to write was a parody or an analogy or whatever....heck, I dunno. My entire vocabulary is only about 25 words, most of them under five letters.

Don't feel bad..I've had my share of STUPID..that's how I know so much about it.
And speaking about vocabulary..sometimes the most sophisticated word I can think of is -- DUH!

Well I'm a reasonably savvy car owner and I recognized CF's post as a spoof, and even if I didn't I wouldn't have been foolish enough to follow the advice of not changing the oil on a regular basis. However I can see where someone not so savvy may have taken the post as advice and followed it resulting in unfortunate damage to their vehicle.
I didn't catch the correlation with the septic tank. We have ours pumped every five years and with just the two of us putting nothing but doo-doo and toilet tissue down there I wonder if this is really necessary. Cabin Fever, how do I measure the sludge? Is it just a question of sticking a stick into the tank or what? And please, give me the straight poop as I am not so savvy about the septic system

I just change oil when the thing stops smoking ! That way I don't have to drain it.

I think the post lowered the integrity of the site and it certainly did not belong in this section. If I were Chuck I would delete the post and smack CF's wrist.

Once a year, measure the sludge depth and scum (grease) thickness in your tank as shown in the diagram below. (It's kinda like using the dipstick to measure the oil level in your vehicle).
All you need are two simple, home-made measuring devices. One is just a long pole with a clean, white rag wrapped around the bottom 3 feet of the pole. The other is a pole with a 5” x 5” piece of plywood attached to the end. Use these poles to make the measurements shown in the diagram below. Let me know if you have any questions.

I hope you're kidding. Ya know, I must really have blown it with this post. The problem is, I'm still trying to figure out what I did that was so rotten. The goal of my post was to help people understand the importance of septic tank maintenance. Are you saying that posts on septic tank maintenance do not belong in forum? What am I missing?
Or was it the unorthodox way in which I portrayed my message that doesn't belong in this forum and actually caused the forum to lose integrity? I was simply attempting to compare vehicle maintenance to septic tank maintenance to get people to think how important it is. I thought it would be a "no brainer" when people read my first sentence about never having changed oil in 60,000 miles. Perhaps I should have started my post with the words, "Once upon a time....."
Perhaps you feel that I should have been straightforward with my message. But ya know, the Greatest Teacher in the world used "stories" to help those listening to better understand His message. (eg, the sower casting seed on rocky ground to be analogous to the Word being rejected by those that are hard of heart) Even though I'm not worth to kiss His feet, I felt compelled to use one of His teaching methods.

Hey, maybe it's possible to sway this thread away from the current path toward a true story about running a truck into the ground without bothering to change oil. I work with a guy who is the dictionary definition of a moron. He has an early 90s Ford 150 with the straight six. At about 200K he decides to quit the oil changing business for good. twenty five thousand miles later, his oil pressure is almost zilch, and he decides to address the issue. He switches to straight kerosene and runs it until it warms up. At this point he attempts to drain the "oil" but he ends up digging long "sludgeturds" out of the pan with a screwdriver, until the kero would flow. He repeated the process until the sludge was apparently cleared out. He refilled the oil, and drove it for a few days, until the oil pump screen clogged. He then had to replace the pump. The truck still runs fine as it nears 300K. Once I stopped laughing at him,I asked if it was a good idea to run 25K between changes? He decided to go back to every 3K. He may be a moron, but he has good stories.

I dunno... but it seems that there are a few people here that do not grasp or at least enjoy things like parody, irony, or even gentle mocking. I'm not saying everyone should like things as extreme as Landover Baptist, but just because you do not 'get' it, don't try to burn someone at the stake for it either.

When CF begins advocating going without changing his skivvies for 60 days to see whether there are any ill effects. . . that's when I'll begin worrying.

No filter needed!
When I buy a car I make sure it leaks a little oil that way when I keep topping off, I get a continuous oil change.

When I read the first post I thought it was obviously a farce. I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I thought it was done simply to add some levity to the board. After CF pointing out the comparison between vehicle maintenance and septic tank maintenance I took it seriously. Ether way it brought some interesting reading for me.
