A standard size septic tank is around 1000 to 1500 gallons. On the average, a family of four uses around 200 gallons of water per day. If you just had your tank pumped empty, it would take around a week or so for it to fill up. Once the tank is full of water, the water then spills out of the tank through the tank's outlet to the leach field. The purpose of the tank is to catch organic matter and grease. The purpose of the leachfield is to get rid of the water.

Some people actually just have holding tanks for their wastewater (no drainfield). These tanks get pumped out every few weeks,

Is there more to the post, CF?

DH is thinking about installing a grey water system when we expand the house, would this reduce the number of times we have to clean out the tank?

If that is allowed in your location, that would decrease the amount of undigetable 'things' (cloth fibers, sand, dirt, etc) that settle in the bottom of your tank, so yes it would give you more time between pumpings.
