We are looking at a place in Roberts ID, which is close to Rigby and Idaho Falls. Do you know much about the growing season there? Would you rethink moving to Idaho because of the harsh winters?
The growing season in that area is still shorter than average. Weather- your looking at high temps in the 80's during summer and 25 degrees or so average winter daytime temps. Last winter as interesting, as I've never lived in an area that had so much snow (I live 2 1/2 hours south of Idaho Falls). However, my childen LOVED it! I would not rethink moving due to the harsh winters. No different than living somewhere that is extremely hot. You simply have to find things to do indoors during that time. It's a great time to make crafts, bake, play games, sew, etc. Plan things that you may not have had time to do during the spring/summer/fall as working a farm is demanding of your time. I dont think you'd regret making a change in your life. Living a simple life is a wonderful thing.

Thumbs up Homesteading

Hi from Australia. Odd to have someone write from the other side of the world? Do we know about your market conditions.... Nah..not a thing!
Just want you to understand two things. 1. Your need an income, even a part time job to cover every day expenses. 2. You can do it and you will only wonder why you didnt do it earlier.
We have 4 children. Now Country kids and real nice kids! They do help on the farm. We do farm, mix farming. Cows , sheep, chooks, Clydesdales and we would never give up even the bad times to return to a city. Dont be put off but do be aware that you will need a small regular income at first. PLEASE dont go borrowing from banks etc. We never have and its been hard at times but now we are coming out on top. Take a look at our little farm at www.farmcraftandcountry.com.au. We have about 350 acres with another 2500 at our disposal. Cant afford to stock all that but we are well on the way. You can too. Dont be afraid to ask advice from new friends and neighbors. Good luck and God bless to you all.
