Winter Driving

Three Jane and others,

Been there done that! And broke the hub spindle on one of my dad's cars doing it the wrong way!

Never apply the brakes when going down a hill in slippery conditions. Downshift into low and let your transmission brake you down the hill. Truckers do that all the time to the consternation of may localities.

The key to winter driving is knowing what to do and when to do it. How to accelerlate, countersteer, brake and use your transmission. If you know what your doing you can get through 12"+ of snow with a REAR DRIVE sedan. I know, because I've done it for years. Cheesehead, born and raised.

Share the Love,

Diamondtim

Don't ever use brakes on snow or ice, power out of situations, use your gears and keep it all at low rpms.

Use a tank

Best vehicle in the snow is a tank. Something like a M47, M60 or M1. Even Mike Dukakis knew that, shame he had to wear that stupid helmet. Really do need one if you ever get 2 inches of snow in MA like Mike did.

When going fast down hills use the horn, if that don't work use the machine gun. I don't mind driving in snow in just about any car, really hate the other idiots. A tank would be ideal, just keep her on the road, pretend all that crunching is just snow.

Them lil Dodge Omni's were good in snow, built like tanks too.

ThreeJane - If you would have had a set of Super Swamper TSL tires on there you would have made it no problem. Plus they're so loud on pavement you can't hear the kids in the backseat.

Wet logs have been the downfall of many a fourwheeler. Detroit Lockers, traclocs and big tires still die on wet logs...

Beware of wet logs!

I have to put my vote in for Subaru also....I'm on my second one. The first is a 92 loyale wagon that I paid 1500 for, and drove for almost 3 years. I got an 02 forester in April of this year, and I love it! The older one has it's place, but the new one has larger tires, more ground clearance, and a killer stereo[when you drive an hour one way in GOOD weather.....gotta have my tunes!! ]. I like their dependability, good gas mileage, and just all around usefullness...you just canNOT imagine the amount of stuff that I can get crammed into/onto the forester...........eh Marlene???
I also have to agree with the poster that talked about stupid drivers....I see more 4wds off in the ditch after the first snow/cool spell...it really is stupid....I can do better in a good 2wd than they can in a 4wd..........

Yep,we get the SUV crowd that thinks 4wd means you can drive FAST in all weather.Just like the commercials.

What a bunch of lowlanders.

Also 4wd makes your vehicle impervious to rocks and fog.

ICE,whats that?I have 4wd.

I have 6 foot lift on my truck, therfore I can speed.

Where do these people come from???????

Wink 4 Wd

Higher 4 WD vehicles are really nice, I live in Northern Ontario (Canada) and I've been plowing snow with the front bumper of my Nissan Pathfinder. But remember 4 WD is only useful if your careful and know what your doing with it. Otherwise you'll just get futher in before you get stuck... As for whether a truck is a good idea, an SUV will serve just as well but trucks are fun!
