That was nice that they fessed up and it was not done in spite just ignorance. Goats are still viewed as being able to eat ANYTHING. Honesty is not something that happens much today.

Sound like they would be interested in learning how to manage animals. They could be cultivated into future farmers with a little encouragement and time if you were up to becoming a mentor. I am so sorry for the loss it is the hardest thing about having animals.

Rules for animal husbandry:

1) animals will die and
2) owners can't always stop rule #1

Well at least the mystery has been solved. Still a very sad story. Take care.

And you have hopefully instilled in at least some people that everything is not as simple as some think. I still wonder at times if someone was feeding my horse who I had to keep on the thin side to keep from laminitis. If that thought had occurred to me before I put him down when being unable to keep him sound, I would have posted a sign on the gate by the road about his condition.

I admire your handling of this loss.

I have to applaud the fact that your neighbors came forward and admitted to the accidental incident. I know that doesn't bring back your wife's pet, but in this day and age when so many are willing to shrug off responsibility, it's refreshing to hear that there is hope.

Yes, if you have live stock, you are going to have dead stock. That is something a young Amish man said to us when we bought our homestead from him and my husband and I are always reminding ourselves of that now more than ever as we are bringing our first livestock in the form of chickens to the farm this spring.

Still, I know how bad your wife is hurting over her lost doe. They have a way of leaving hoof prints on your heart. Give her a hug and let the ones responsible help out with farm chores for a week. Actions, even well meaning gone bad, have repercussions. You will both come away better people for the experience. Hug your wife for me. Blessings to all.

Those times when you think you're helping, but you're actually destroying. Maybe the feeder had some scrap corn and rather than throw them away, he/she decided to give it to the goat. Sorry for your loss.

They offered to help out around our place to make it up to my wife, they feel worse than she does. At least I know that it wasn't done out of spite. But we still miss her a lot.
Glad you solved the mystery and that it was not malice on anyone's part. Still it is very sad. These kids are to be admired for taking responsibility and offering to help you out there. They must have loved your goat too. So sorry that you lost her and that what the kids meant as kindness to an animal turned into something so tragic.
