Nah the outer pair were actually my husband's socks, so they fit nicely over the top.

I have to say I am sooooo glad I was lazy and didn't put the bucks in with the does in August. Otherwise I'd be on barn watch this week! Now I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I get lucky between storms in February. If I lived up north, I'd be so tempted to just bring the livestock in the living room to birth and just clean up the mess afterward!

My well house has a heater on thermostat aimed at the pump & wellhead, so the pump is fine, but I never even thought about the line that leads OUT off the wellhead to feed the frost-free hydrants. None of the hydrants had running water this AM, but I faced the heater at that line coming off the wellhead, and all hydrants are cooperating now. Yay! Temps were in the minus single digits last night. BRRR-RRR!

My Ritchie Waterer is freezing up. I had to use a hair dryer to thaw the overflow a couple of days and I suspected that the heater element was going out. It's original and has some age on it. I have the replacement part.

I tried to adjust the thermostat outward but it did not change anything. I replaced the heat cable this fall.

Water is getting there. It is just getting froze up in the tank and freezing-in the floating disk. Last night I put a small hair dryer inside and on low. It thawed things out to normal operation.

I hope I don't have a melted shorted mess when I get there tonight.

Replaced the heater element. Made a little wind break left the hair dryer running and clamped on a heat lamp above to keep my fingers warm. I was fine. Gave it the wet finger on the iron test. Good to go.

Stopped at ranch to check on waterer. Cocky detector was activated. Water was frozen. Reset breaker. Breaker tripped at 40.seconds. Moved thermostat in. Reset cocky detector and breaker. Breaker tripped at 51 clicks of the fence charger. Moved thermostat all the way in. Reset breaker and checked cocky detector. Breaker stayed.on. Branded fingers on heater. Smelled burning flesh. Returned an hour later. All is working. Tank is thawed. Cocky detector is monitoring.

well those roosters that had big red combs now have about half black combs from getting frostbit (they chose to roost in the trees instead of the coop ) this has happened before leavein the birds with no ill effects other than ubed combs that look like roman soldgers

Arnie, I'm told that if you rub petroleum jelly or vasoline on their combs and wattles it will help them from becoming frostbitten - if it's worth it to you to chase em down and grease em up. Not sure that's any guarantee against the frigid temps you're having on top of the fact that they prefer the trees - but something you could try on those you can get your hands on, I guess.
