I know what you are saying, it is the same way here. What I am speaking of, if you were to intentionally shoot over someone's head like you mentioned in post #9 and they know you did that and turn you in to the law, in most counties in the US, the DA will have to charge you. If you shot close to them they may say you were shooting at them. It just ain't worth going to jail over.

Seems to me that, under those circumstances, it's a matter of "he said, she said" and who's going to prove it?
Not that I advise shooting over someone's head. You don't know where the shot is going to land, and that's not good.
'Sides that, ammo is too spendy these days to waste it. Shoot at what you mean to hit.

The reason that I do it is that we got robbed twice. Each time there was over $2,000 worth of tools and household items taken. The police said they couldn't do much of anything because they didn't see it happen. And the insurance company wasn't much help either.

He reached the front gate/fence about the time as the truck passed and someone in the truck shot him. He survived the wound. LUCKILY one of our "neighbors" who lives over a mile away had seen the truck although was not aware of what had happened and they "just thought that something did not seem right" and wrote down the license plate number!!! How is that for luck?! When Mac called around to different people on our road and described the truck and what had happened that neighbor had the vehicle plate. The police did respond on this one because we could describe the vehicle and the number on the plate.

Actually here it is clear that shooting a dog gets a response from officials while shoot a goat would not.

If they're driving around shooting at livestock and the owner shoots over their head, I seriously doubt they're gonna report it to the police. Then they'd have to explain what they were doing there.
I however am not confident enough with my aim to do that.
Shoot the tires out and call the police. Then they can't drive off. Worked with my crazy stalker.

where I want to may have a point about the dog being the object of the shooter. There was a report in one of the western states that the killing of sheep, cattle, etc., by wolves did not impact much on the community BUT when trail cameras caught the wolves destroying some Pyrs that were trying to defend their charges, WOW! the community rose up in arms over the dogs dying...people do love dogs (me, too!) and let's face it, livestock is viewed as "encroaching on the natural." Still, I do think that the fact that we had the license plate number and a good description of the truck aided our situation.

Forgive me for saying this Pony, but your road is one continuous speedbump.

I wonder if we're neighbors and don't know it. I'd say the same thing about my road!

Oh yes this time of year.
I knew a Guy that shot around 35 Deer one night just left them.
Had two Dogs shot opening weekend Firearms Deer Season, sued the Guys and won.
Know a Guy that has no Drivers or Hunting Licenses but drives around shooting Deer from the road.
Had a Guy shoot a Deer from the road by my place one time I took after him. Conservation Agent caught him, give him a ticket for driving on Revoked Licenses.

O&itw, no need to forgive you for speaking plain truth.
CeilisMom, if you're in Douglas County, we're probably neighbors.

Pony, thanks for the heads up on these occurrences. We are northeast of you but there are a lot of knot-heads in the world so you never know what might happen. We occasionally have strangers in pick up trucks 'shine' spot lights from their vehicles around a creek as they cross a bridge that is near our property line. Sometimes they shine the beam into our bedroom. DH has been known to go out with a rifle in hand and just stand by the house so when the beam hits the house they clearly see him. Never fails to send them on their way....quickly.
I'm sure many figure that since our home is Amish in design, we are Amish and not going to do anything other than be pacifistic. WRONG!
Hope you find the perpetrators and justice is done. Stay safe.
