Susie,

That breeder is a crook! I would be inclined to never deal with them again, but I ---- sure wouldn't let them steal my hard earned money!

Doug,

I know what you should do! You should sell ME one of those lovely January does for $350

Whew!!!!! I have good news. We talked. I made an offer at a discounted rate. She said God Bless you and accepted and may be buying several more that I had considered selling. Actually I gave her the discount of her deposit at today's prices, not April pricing.

By the way. The two replacements are Purebred. The others were American.

You sound like a great and decent guy to do business with. If I were into Nubians I would totally be a customer. Glad it seems to have worked out!

I would refund a deposit if an animal died while in my care. No refunds on deposits if the owner backs out or changes her mind. However, as a buyer, I'd never pay for an animal up front before actually being there to pick up my animal. After all, these are live animals, and they are known to die.

Written contracts are a very good thing. Non-refundable deposits are there for a reason too. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

I like to pay cash on the day, pick up the animal and be done. Even selling horses. You pay me cash, its your animal. If you put it on your trailer and it kicks the wall on the way home and breaks a bone. Its your horse. Same way when I buy an animal. I pay, its mine. But I know in the world of goats and show goats it doesn't always work that way. People want a certain bloodline, they pay in advance, pay deposits on future breedings to try and get what they want. Not me.

Personally I hate dealing with the public and don't sell anything, any animal to any individual. I just sell a few meat goats through the auction. Then I don't deal with the buyers and I don't look back.

Doug, That is great news! I really do like to think that goat people are good people who can work things out. I admire your kindness to these people and willingness to try and work through a crazy situation. I know it is a "business" and that contracts are more and more necessary to keep things "straight" but the personal side of it has always been what appeals to me...would hate to lose that.
Susie, Knock me over with a stick! Good grief! Are we talking Saada here? Reuel? What in the world???!! I am stunned and horrified by this. These are the breeders you just expect to be above any kind of crazy dealings. Man, who can you trust??!

I can't believe a customer would expect anyone to hold goats for four months! The way I see it she could have taken those goats at the first designated date, especially when treating with Baycox. It's not your problem that her husband got sick or any other issue that prevented her from collecting them. Furthermore, you told her she could have a portion of the deposit back only IF you had money left over from their care.
Having said that it's always good biz to try and work something out simply to keep your reputation. You never know how people can bad mouth you and ruin your biz. So glad it all worked out.
But I make it clear deposits are non-refundable.

If you are worried about a law suit, that one should protect you well unless you responded with something indicating you would continue to hold them fro her. Then you would face the legal question of do you need to return the deposit, less boarding fees.

The only thing that makes me go hmm is the fact that when she first came to pick them up they were ill. Would she have taken them right then and there if they did not have scours?

When we sell our LGD pups if we take a deposit we write up a contract saying we want half to hold your pup until it is pick up. If the pup is sick, or dies on the fault of the us we will refund your deposit. If you back out for what ever reason you forfeit the deposit.

If you are going to take deposit you may want to write something up.

Not being rude but how much food are you feeding kids that you go through a bag a week? We feed 2 to 4 lbs of food a day to our kids and we don't even go through that much. lol

I feed them as much as they can eat. I bought a sack yesterday afternoon at Orscheln to get me by until I buy more today at Gregg's. (They were closed yesterday) I fed last night and refilled this morning. That sack is empty now.

Did I say a bag a week? I feed five bags a week to 15. If you do the math that comes to a little over 2 lbs a day.

We only feed growing kids, bucks in rut, and show kids so we aren't feeding nearly as many as you are. The rest get pasture and good hay.

Paula... let's just say it wasn't Reuel.. Sandy was WONDERFUL to work with. (did you hear.. she had a horrid car wreck in early june... Icu. complications.. rehab...the works) they had to sell off a lot of the herd.. so sad, I know how much she loved her girls (she had worked 40 years with those same bloodlines).. So happy to have gotten a doe from her.. that doeling I LOVE..she's big and long and wide.. everything I'd hoped she'd be.

The only time I've ever taken a deposit on a kid was this year, on a doe kid. A lady several states away wanted her, and I wanted a deposit to make sure she was going to buy her, since I could have sold her before she was to be picked up.

I took a deposit on her...$100, which was half of her price. The DAY I got the deposit in the mail, the doe broke her leg. Thank you, Murphy. Since she was still MY goat, I took her to the vet and paid to have her leg splinted. She healed fine, and the lady bought her and is happy. The vet bill totaled $192. I sold the kid for $200. Oh well, that's life.

I hope you have every success with this new deal. It's sounds like a win win. Will you know soon?

Susie, I did not know that about Sandy...have never talked to her, but feel like I know someone from the way they blog, etc. Very sorry to hear it. I am very glad to know that you had such a good experience with her! The other is just amazing...sorry to say that while we are really almost out of raising goats now, we still have people who call us about what we think about certain herds, etc. and I know one story they are going to hear for sure...That is partially what I meant when I told Doug that "the personal side of the goat business" is so important. Contracts are necessary and weird stuff happens...but if people's hearts are in the right place much of it can be worked out...THAT is still important.
