I'm actually hoping for boys this year! I have two ladies wanting doelings, but I'm not planning to keep any. This is the first year we are planning to raise and butcher the boys, so I'm hoping for a good little crop.

actually as long as you have a good sturdy buck pen (we have NEVER had a single buck break-out).. a mixed herd wouldn't be hard.. I've had a lamancha buck here for almost 2 years once.. never had any unplanned mixed babies.. also have had ND. bucks.. no surprise teeny babies either.. Control/containment is your friend LOL.

That's probably just about the only way to guarantee a doe year!

very lovely bucks and very, very tempting but alas too early for me. come late fall i would like to have a breeding age buck for my young does but my fences won't be up for another two weeks and the buck pen is in a special area that needs careful scrutiny for trash and potential dangers so it probably won't be ready until summer. i just have to trust that there will be top notch bucks available later. Will either go with reg. nubian or reg. lamancha but prob. nubian for first time. thank you for the photos and education

Yeah, I hear ya reason I need a buck pen but I can't swing the price right now either. Have the price of 4 doelings, a charger and 900 feet of electric netting to get through and I don't trust my dogs to a kid right now on top of that. They are both pups and breeds with prey drive. The fencing for them is this week and the fencing for the doelings will be in mid to late march. I'll be looking for an above avg. reg. buck of breeding age (be it 5 months or one year) for my Lamancha x Nubian does in a few months. Being within your driving range now, I think, going from Georgia to Missouri, its a huge drag that my preparation is way off

That's what happened the first year we had kids (2012). I was hoping for boys and got three girls.

When they are that much younger and presumably smaller... do you have to 'assist'? Or are they determined enough to find a way?

Seems to me the younger boys are more determined to get the job done, the older boys seem to woo more.
