Slugs and snails are needed to complete the life cycle of live flukes.

You can give Valbazen only in the latter part of pregnancy, never in the first trimester. So after 100 days bred.

I honestly don't know how big of an issue liver flukes are in our area.. my goats graze on hills so I don't think they are at much risk. If your animals graze in lower lying areas or flatter areas you may have a bigger chance of issues. I rarely see slugs or snails here.

Hey-sorry I've not been back to give an update.
His lids are still so pale. He's weak ... he spends a fair amount of time lying down-but I've been giving him Red Cell and vit B. He still has an appetite ... I was wondering tonight if I should take a healthy goat in with him for a transfusion. He's such a sweet boy (and I paid $350 for him!) I really want him to live but I'm so torn.

I was going to start a thread to ask if anyone culls because of parasite loads. I've got several girls who never seem to struggle and several who always seem to have issues. I was talking to a local farmer about pigs and he has goats. He says he has culled and no longer has to give chemical wormers. IDK what to do/think. How do some people just throw goats out in the pasture and have them live forever and ever and others seem to have such issues with parasites? It's not like my goats are neglected- if ANYTHING they are over-pampered and spoiled rotten! It just doesn't seen fair.

I'm off to pout now.

I would begin treatment for pneumonia. This is just throwing up big red flags for me. If he's been weak that long he's probably either got it or working on it. I have had two get it this year with no temp. It has been a bad year for it everywhere it seems. Once they start to really show symptoms, they go down rapidly.

Is he eating much? If he's not eating good, I would put a coat on him or something and start giving b vitamins. Also be sure he is drinking and doesn't start to get dehydrated.

It will take weeks to get the color back to his eyelids. As long as he was effectively wormed he doesn't need much else specifically for the anemia IMO. He just needs to get to eating and his body will do it's thing.

I think it's important to cull for parasite resistance, but only with animals born and raised on my place. If they were brought in, I give the benefit of the doubt.

Want to clarify on the worming/anemia, of course, you will want to follow up with another dose at 10-11 days and one more after that..

I think you can select for parasite resistance although that does not mean that you don't worm them or make sure that your water buckets and feeders are clean.

Also if you are not 100% sure that parasites are causing his problem then you don't know if you should not use his progeny or not.

Maybe I missed it but did you have a vet do a fecal on him??

I'm not sure I could diagnose worms just based on the eyelids because I've had plenty of healthy goats with pale eyelids.

I'd say bottle jaw would be a more reliable symptom and even that could be caused by something else.
