I have 1 feeder, not fixed and on it the keyhole slots go to the bottom of the feeder and there is always more waste out of that one.
If you have a feeder where the goat reaches up to eat you will nearly always have more runny eyes and coughing from hay particles. Where when the goat reaches down you don't have this problem.

I agree. Keyhole feeders save the most hay from being wasted by far. They are awesome.

Yes they do save the most hay but, unless they have a clear view through the feeder, they make it possible for a goat, who has their head into the feeder, not to see another coming up. A goat can get a terrible broadside from another goat while their head is caught in the keyhole bottom.
I stopped using mine when I saw that happen. The doe's front legs got swept out from under her and she was scrambling to get up so she could get her head out of the narrow keyhole whille the other doe hit her again.
I have toyed with different designs of a keyhole since then but have never come up with one where the goat was not actually trapped in the narrow opening.
I have found that raising the feeder up with a foot rest at the bottom, so the goat has to stand with the front higher than the rear legs, does discourage them from moving around so much and dragging the hay with them.

OK. I'm going to try and post a picture.
One picture is of the ground showing months and months of wasted hay.
The other two are of the feeder.

I am using the HT app Manage Attachments, the images have downloaded and are listed under Attach Files but when I Post Quick Reply the images don't go through. The images were taken with my iphone and uploaded with a Mac if that makes any difference. They are .jpg images.
I have one image attached to this msg.

I put them straight from the iPhone. It's not the camera icon. It's the one beside it.

This is 9 months of manure and hay. The manure is about 2" thick and the hay is but a mere handful.

Sorry about the excess images. At least I got an image to post. I'm afraid if I try to edit the pics I will remove everything.

Lindamoo- clever idea. First do you have problems with goats ending up on top of the grate in the feeder? Especially kids.

I have saanens and enough keyholes for my entire herd so that makes a big difference. I wouldnt use keyholes for alpines.

I am also very intrigued by your very unusual (to me, anyway! I've never seen one like that) hay feeder, Lindamoo! "A little larger than a square bale"...floating grate (is it heavy...looks sort of like a hog panel) and is that lovely black doe a mini (?) or standard? Am wondering, too, if your daughter ever had somebody jump up there and foul the hay with urine or berries...or worse, get stuck. It really is an interesting idea...just want to get some idea if there are any observed drawbacks at this point. Thanks very much for sharing your idea!! My husband just came in and he, too, is interested! He wants to know how high do those four corner posts rise above the bale? Thanks, again.
