I am really surprised at the assertion that dairy goats are inbred. AAMOF, I take exception to it.
Most folks here spend a lot of time researching lines and relatedness before breeding. As already noted, it's responsible husbandry to be present when your livestock kids.
Sure, you're going to see a lot of hairy scary issues come up on a forum known for its helpfulness and knowledge. Where else would one go when in trouble?
The majority of kiddings go without a hitch. You know, the ones where we demand pictures.
For the rare ones that don't go well, I am grateful for the experienced assistance I know I can count on here at HT Goat Forum

Now, see, I got all side-tracked because of that inbreeding comment.
Wintrrwolf, IIRC, you were selling off all your non-PB stock to focus on Nubians. What is so special about this deal that would make you change your plan? Are you hoping for more milk, heftier kids, or something else?
Not being skootchy, just wondering why (what appears to be) the sudden shift in plans.

Actually it was the fact for me...I found out the nigerian stock or my nigi's were driving me nuts!!! Not saying that all are naughty, noisy, and pushy (even the crosses) but mine were especially compared to my nubians. Maybe they were that way because they were smaller so felt the need to be MORE but it was getting to much for me. I bred some good sturdy stock and so they sold decently but nothing compared to possible nubian or kiko prices.
I have known these guys with the kiko's for almost 2 yrs and have even taken care of all their critters when they went out of town, so I got to meet and get to know these goats and all seemed pretty laid back and quiet, their bucks though are 2x stinkier than my nubian bucks just have to point that out.
Even if I don't cross them the boy Partytime comes from excellent kiko stock...has anyone seen the prices a good registered Kiko goes for?

O&ITW I completely disagree with you.
This forum gets flooded with frantic post in the Spring mostly because so many newbies are breeding goats and have never attended any births. They panic when sometimes they should sit back and let the doe handle it. Or instead of intervening a little they do nothing until it's a huge emergency.
I for one attend all births of every animal I have ever owned. When our Rottweilers had pups I was there. When our horse had her filly I was there, and when my goats kid I am there. I think it's the responsible thing to do. Yes my goats would be happy to kid out in the woods somewhere but honestly I hate kid hide and go seek. Not to mention I LOVE watching births! It never gets old to me, it's always amazing even 15 yrs later.

Yes just looking today at another herd in my vicinity (Bodega Bay) they are asking $525/$550 for 2013 registered spring doelings and $600/$650 for registered bucklings -- about $200 less if w/o the registration....
They have a closed herd, no outside animals for 3 years and will test for CAE for you if you pay for the test on an animal you are buying(you dont have to complete purchase if animal is positive). They vaccinate for CL and said diseases mainly occur in dairy breeds (didnt seem to think Johnnes was an issue)....

Wintrrwolf, I apologize for hijacking your thread. My point was that I think there might be great value to you in obtaining this buck. The crossing has a lot of potential if you are not primarily interested in registering or showing all you goats. You can use it in selective instances, and observe the quality of the results.

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding of why we attend births. I don't know anyone who has inbred their goats to the point they have kidding trouble.
I attend as many births as possible because I want to. I sure was glad when I was there the time Cassie had five bucklings.
Attending births is what responsible homesteaders do, as far as I'm concerned. Did it for my horses, too. It's also a long tradition with sheep folks.

Yep. Been watching births in cats, dogs, goats, horses, cows, chicken eggs and everything else. Helped who needed help.

If you had good results last time, why not repeat the breeding? I know I was tickled with what you got, and I only saw pictures.

just throwing my two cents into the thread drift but most troubles with dairy goats or any goats will come from us humans trying to micromanage and feed them to death. KISS = less problems.
Cute little buckling hope he gives you the goals you hope to achive

I really think you'll love the kids you get from Monkey.. His dam finished her Championship as a first freshener.. her show wins are impressive.. 1 X GRAND, BJDIS 2011 4 X 1ST 2 X 2ND 2 X RCH 1 X GCH 1 X BOB.. Monkey's sire was no slouch either.. he comes for lots of milk.. lots of champions (his grandmother was GCH Signpine Razberri T 6*M LA 4-04 92 EEEE)... AND.. LOTS and LOTS of spots.. (I paid $400 for him as a bottle baby.. I was overbucked when you came to pick up Pebbles... or he'd still be here breeding does.. I like you.. knew you'd be a good home.. and knew you loved spots.... I'm glad to see you are planning on using him this year.. can't wait to see what all you get (Monkey's breeder is also Edge's breeder..I bought them at the same time) and I'm LOVING the kids I'm getting from Edge..
