Serious help needed!!

I have a goat who had a worm infestation. Got her wormed and treated. I have given her Bo-Se, Vitamin B complex, and electrolytes. She is showing little interest in food. The only thing she is showing interest in is drinking the electrolytes from a bottle. She can hold her head up but is having difficulty standing. What do I need to do for her?

Doug Hodges 09/01/13 01:53 PM

Worm Infestation? How do you know? What did you find? What did you give?

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 01:57 PM

She had scours and worms around her anus. I gave her safe guard. The scours have cleared up. And so has the worms around her anus. She is back to having berry type of poo.

Doug Hodges 09/01/13 01:59 PM

How old? When was that?

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:02 PM

She is 6 months old and it was 4 days ago when she was treated for the worms.

Doug Hodges 09/01/13 02:06 PM

Ok. Now let's wait for the experts. I bet you are advised to get a fecal ASAP and treat with a different wormer. Most on here say safeguard just feeds the worms in this area.

Minelson 09/01/13 02:08 PM

Safeguard will work for tape worms but I am wondering if she has other worms too. Did you look at her eyelids for pink? She may need a stronger de-worming.
((((hugs)))

Minelson 09/01/13 02:09 PM

Yes a fecal test is in order but I'm sure you won't be able to get then done until Tues. :(

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:09 PM

I have the cattle pour on that most people recommend but I am not sure of the dosage. I just don't want to loose her. I have on hand right now penicillin to if I need to use that as well..

Minelson 09/01/13 02:10 PM

Do you have a thermometer to take her temp? What kind of catttle pour on do you have. Grab the bottle and type here exactly what it is

Wait for someone else but I think its 1ml per 22 lbs orally.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:12 PM

Cydectin and also have Ivermectin

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:14 PM

The worms around her anus and that was in her poo looked like pin worms not tape worms

Minelson 09/01/13 02:14 PM

Also, what has she been eating and how much. Just trying to figure out what is going on...the worms may have been a secondary problem. Did you do Coccidiosis prevention? Any chance she got into chicken feed, moldy hay or something abnormal? Are all the other goats ok?

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:17 PM

Done it. All the other goats are fine. I wormed all them again too. I have quarantined her.

dozedotz 09/01/13 02:17 PM

We have not had to treat for worms yet. However, it seems to me that the fact that you could see them around her anus indicates at least tape worms which usually do not pose a serious threat to an adult animal but can be quite serious to a young one. The fact that you are able to get the liquid in her is a very good sign. I agree that you need to get her temperature to see if maybe something else has gotten a hold on her in her weakened state. What are you offering her to eat? How much "interest" does she have in the food? Is she passing very much fecal matter? Peeing? Does she have a cough?

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:19 PM

She has been eating hay, grass and goat nibble (or whatever it is called)

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:23 PM

No cough. I have been offering her hay, fresh cut grass and tree branches with leaves on them. She will take a few bites and leave it and fresh water and the electrolytes. She has been peeing and pooping.

Minelson 09/01/13 02:24 PM

Cydectin pour on is 1 cc/ 20lbs orally
Ivermectin 1% injectable I give orally at 1 cc/25lbs. I have no experience with the cydectin pour on....only the Quest horse paste. I have heard you have to be very careful with Cydectin dosages but Ivermectin is safer if you give too much. Too much is better than too little with Ivermectin. Ivermectin is not working for worms anymore in some areas.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:25 PM

Do I need to give her the cattle pour on? How much and which one?

Minelson 09/01/13 02:26 PM

Getting her temp is very important. Even if you have to run to the store to get a thermometer.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:27 PM

The Ivermectin I have says pour on.

I was told its best to guess weight and then round up on the Cydectin. And Ill shut up now and let people that know help you.

I personally wouldnt us a pour on right now in her weakend condition but right now I dont think things took promising anyway.
I have successfully used pyrentel horse wormer at 5xs the horse dose for the initial wormer. You are also probably battling coccidia as once one card of the house starts to fall it all comes down.
Penn will probably do more harm than good unless there is an infection which we are unable to know being on a forum.

I really hope I am wrong about this having to be a learning experience. Electrolytes have a lot of salt in them, so be careful how you use them.

dozedotz 09/01/13 02:46 PM

Cannon Farms, As I said, we just haven't had the worm experience...but it seems crazy to me that "pin worms" could cause a 6 month old kid to be this sick. Do you think that it is really the cocci or are pin worms that serious?
Sorry to sound so dumb, but I just kept thinking maybe she had picked up pneumonia or something from being weak.
RedBuffalo, so sorry this is headed in the wrong direction. Sometimes this forum is a sad learning experience for all of us.

Have you tried giving her alfalfa pellets? They're kind of rich but better than nothing especially if her poop is normal.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:48 PM

Her temp is 101.3. I made a homemade electrolyte. I mixed 2 cups boiling water, 2 TBS. Sugar, 1/4 tsp. Salt, 1/4 tsp. Baking soda and then added a little bit of sorghum to get her interest.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:49 PM

I have Nuflor on hand but her breathing sounds normal.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:50 PM

I don't have alfalfa pellets on hand.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:53 PM

I am not a quitter. I am not going to give up on my baby. I have tried everything I can think of myself and need outside ideas.

Minelson 09/01/13 02:54 PM

Pull down her lower eye lid...is it white, pale, pink or red?
The temp is a little low so I don't think she has an infection

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 02:56 PM

Her eyelids look light pink and so do her gums. Not white.

Minelson 09/01/13 02:56 PM

Yes do not give up!! More people will be on to help you. It's just hard because it's a Sunday and a holiday weekend (when most things go wrong UGH!) So you have an emergency vet available?

dozedotz 09/01/13 02:58 PM

Ok...that's a little low on the temp. If it isn't her gut and it isn't her lungs and the low temp would indicate that she probably doesn't have an infection... but I know it isn't good either...is she just losing ground to the weakness caused by the pin worms?

Cannon_Farms 09/01/13 03:00 PM

It would greatly help if I could see pictures of said worms, they are not healthy no matter the case. Seems a general consensus that safeguard was the treatment but I would still use the Pyrentel as it works, and works on BPW enough to help. 2nd does is needed

Minelson 09/01/13 03:01 PM

I got some advice from a friend on FB with a lot of experience with goats she said...
No grain, give baking soda, get Geritol tonic or Red cell, stop all this worming till she can get a fecal. Hay, water with some Bounce back. She needs to call a vet and keep the goat hydrated and going till she can see one or figure out what is wrong and clear it up.
Also another friend said that if the eye membranes are pale to give parsley.
Just passing more info on to you. Both friends said get her to a vet.

Cannon_Farms 09/01/13 03:04 PM

Dyne is a good supplement if you can find it. Dont give her milk and Electrolites within a few hours of each other.
What kind of milk are you using?
Spinach works in place of alfalfa, raw of course for a temp fix. Something has to go in her gut besides electrolites or her gut will shut down.

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 03:06 PM

I didn't take a pick of the worms. I can not visually see anymore right now. They didn't look like a tape worm. They weren't flat. They looked more like pin worms. Tiny needle like white worms. I am going to go give her 3cc of cydectin and more electrolytes.

Minelson 09/01/13 03:06 PM

Cannon it sounds like she is off milk now and onto hay and pellets....

RedBuffalo 09/01/13 03:09 PM

I have not given her any milk. She is drinking the electrolytes from a bottle.
