I found this on "Yahoo Answers"

In general, medications are administered subcutaneously when a slower, more prolonged effect is desired (e.g., insulin, many immunizations, heparin -- an anticoagulant). IM injections are best for larger volumes of medication and when faster absorption of the medicine is desired (e.g., antibiotic).
Subcutaneous injections are administered with shorter and smaller needles than an IM; volume of medication less than 1 cc

Thank you Alice!

I guess I could have looked it up, but I've found one can't always go by what one reads on the internet... and that people here usually know their business.

What are your thoughts. Yahoo answers selects the "best answer" for the reply that is most popular.. Occasionally they are dead wrong. Sometimes I think it is Yahoo's version of "Balderdash"

Personally I do subcutaneous on almost everything, because of the meat issue.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there some medications that state they must be given in the muscle. Others advise to give SQ; then some advise orally. If med advises muscle, then doesn't giving SQ cause problems? (I've always followed instructions given on bottle; so have no idea what would occur if I injected a med SQ that had advised to put it in the muscle.)

I always do shots IM in the neck with no problem. I've always wondered why everyone is getting lumps from it. No lumps in the neck and no discern able muscle damage. Yes I do eat most of the boys that are not keepers.

Here are some Pictures Doug Hodges. My friend that gives her CD & T's this way showed me on one of her kids then had me do the next one. This is 2 different kids of mine trying to make sure it's a clear shot.

When I did these 2 doelings last week they had a little grain in their dish & never hardly flinched.

My dh in the 2nd picture might have his finger a little higher than where I'd actually give the shot but hard to tell in that picture because her tail is down.
I actually cupped their back end like in the last picture while they eat & it's over in seconds.

I read somewhere about a gland or something in the back leg. I really can't remember where I read it. But it said be careful because you might nick it and that would cause problems.

I'm not sure but I think it would be higher up where the leg meets the body.
I know there is a nerve that runs down the back of the leg too & was hesitant to give my shots like this since she showed me last year but she said she has never hit that nerve in all the years she's been doing it this way & she has like I said a Lot of goats that get CD & T's ever year.
This really seemed so much easier & less stressful on the kids too.
She was at a goat show & Ed Kinser( a judge & I believe raises Nigies) showed her how
to give them there.

We don't eat our goats normally so I'm not worried about IM shots so this seems to work better for me, everyone has to do what they think is best for their herd and I will only do CD & T's like this, everything else I'll give SQ.

Those are good pictures (very cute baby goat rumps too). If I was to do a shot there I feel like I could find it pretty well with those shots as a guide.
