Kinda reminds me of little kid's arugments, "My dad's a cop!" "Yeah, well my dad's a judge..."

"You milk nine goats, well, I milk ninety grand champions!"

geeze I felt overwhelmed milking 10 by hand and that took an hour, no it didnt take me long to downsize.
They may be poor producers doing a pint each, or by hand he means placing the inflators on the goat, even with a machine it takes me 35-40 min to milk 7

I seem to run into folks like that all the time. They always know all about everything, how to do it better, what works and doesn't, there stuff or animals are always better. What's sad is that sometimes I actually listen to them. Shame on me!

Some people do have a wealth of good information to share. But when one starts hearing outlandish bragging, it is a pretty good bet that theirs isn't worth much. I guess the proof is in the pudding.

hiddensprings, maybe you should have "oohed" and "aahed" and said "Can I come out an see your setup some morning when you milk?

Well, let's look at it mathematically.

On the stand, off the stand, grain, wash, etc...lets say 5 mins.milking time per goat. At 90 goats would be 7.5 hours of straight milking. AND If every goat averaged to 1.5 lbs per (probably would be more for a good Togg, but I'm padding things here as you can see) - that would be roughly 16.5 gallons of milk per day.

Maybe he raises pigs with the extra milk and is really a HOG farmer? Maybe he really DOES enjoy sitting on a wooden stool for hours on end juggling goats and buckets. Sure bet he doesn't suffer from arthritis....yet!

If I have learned anything from raising livestock; NEVER tell someone they are doing something wrong. People will do things differently from you, that's a fact. It doesn't make it wrong. Someone who tells me that their chickens were better at cleaning up ticks than the guineas were, if they say that their NGs are the best dairy goats ever, if their LGDs are actually 30 greyhounds - who am I to say they are doing it wrong??

People like this guy drive me nuts too. And Bret I've listened to them too many times too ;D

I gotta hand it to you HiddenSprings for not slapping him upside the head - that would have been so hard!

I usually don't tell a lot of people what I do - especially not in an open forum. Generally, when people find out, I get some dismaying responses.

But we should let it go now, b/c I don't want to

I am not a goat person. Don't hate them, but don't have the right fences and can't imagine going through the hassle. Now if you have to spend 7.5 hours milking, have to wash 90 udders, deal with 360 hooves, 90 personalities and 90 X the vetting, why not get 2 cows? I know you folks on the goat site are sputtering at me, and this is a rhetorical question, and I LOVE coming here and seeing the pictures of cute babies and laugh at what you guys go through dealing with your goats, but this is exactly why I wouldn't have 'em.
Good on you for your dedication and I'm really glad for you that you enjoy 'em!

I hate to highjack the thread but if you're getting 1.5lbs of milk per milking from a Toggenburg you're not doing very good at all. I have worked on a dairy and their Toggenburgs give at least 4lbs per milking average. Some give up to 7lbs. My Togg/Alpine cross gives 5-6 lbs per milking. The average for all the breeds they have all together is 4lbs. If you're running a dairy and your getting under 3lbs per milking on your second fresheners it's time to cull.

I can't even imagine wasting our time milking something that only gives 1.5lbs per milking!!!... I expect a min. of 4lbs each milking.. (and that's the low end).. with me still recovering from the brain surgery.. I have taken the year off from milking.. I stay in and watch the grand baby.. leaving Jess to hand milk the does.. she has avg. 16 does in milk this year.. she begins chores at 8am.. finishes up around 11:30.. (that's feeding/milking/straining ect..plus bottling the babies)... she is FAST (can't imagine asking her to do many more then the 16 she's been milking since march).. many more does to milk and we would never see jess again.. she'd be living in the milk barn..

Well like I said, - I padded things....A LOT! But for the fun of it, I'll re-calculate: At 4 lbs per goat, (90 goats) then that would be 45 gallons per day-or- 315 gallons per week. - (the equivalent of 63 five-gallon buckets full), and I don't EVEN know how much $$ you'd have to invest for grain/good hay to feed 90 lactating goats..

...so if he's not using it to feed pigs, or African nations, or mixing it to make some really sweet concrete - it would be an awfully wasteful venture and therefore still...a moronic tale I'd boast not about, if I were he.

Actually, you're only counting one milking. Even at only 4 pounds a milking, that's still a gallon per goat per day. 90 gallons a day... 630 gallons a week.

That guy is a lying sack of goat berries.

my most honest answer to why not just get 2 cows??? simple.. cows don't give goat milk (which is the preferred milk in our house hold).... for me personally reason #1 we don't have cows anymore???? Ploppy, nasty cow poo! YUCK!!!
